Johnny Cage is ready to bask in the spotlight as he goes on his biggest journey yet in the upcoming animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match. The R-rated original feature-length film will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and Digital come October 17, 2023.

From Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match is the fourth installment in the fan-favorite animated series set in the Mortal Kombat universe.

The premise of the latest movie will focus on Johnny Cage in 1980s Hollywood on a mission to become a famous actor. However, things will drastically change for Johnny when his co-star disappears. He will find himself facing a sinister secret society and the beginnings of the brutal fight against the bloodthirsty warriors from the Netherrealm.

Now, while I’m not the biggest fan of Johnny Cage, I have to say that I’m intrigued by the story being set in the 1980s. Judging from the trailer, this version of Johnny Cage is even more annoying than usual.

The voice cast includes Joel McHale as Johnny Cage and Jennifer Grey as herself. Also starring in the movie is Gilbert Gottfried as David Doubldy, Dusan Brown as Chuck Golden, Grey DeLisle as Kia, Robin Atkin Downes as Shinnok, Zehra Fazal as Jataaka, Kelly Hu as Ashrah, Matt Yang King as Concierge, Phil LaMarr as Brian Van Jones, Matthew Mercer as Director/Bully, Dave B. Mitchell as Raiden, and Armen Taylor as Master Boyd.

Here’s the action and gore-filled trailer!

The animation style might need some getting used to. But I guess, in a way, it suits the 1980s? Hmmm.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match has been directed by Ethan Spaulding from a script by Jeremy Adams, with Rick Morales serving as the supervising producer is Rick Morales.

Sam Register and NetherRealm Studios’ Ed Boon also serve as executive producers.

With the home release coming on October 17, 2023, pre-orders should start opening up today.

The Special Features Include:

  • What Would Johnny Cage Do? (featurette) – Step inside the VO Booth with Joel McHale and Jennifer Grey and go behind the scenes with the filmmakers to learn how they brought Johnny Cage’s 80s action film to life.
  • Ninja Mime Trailer
  • Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match Audio Commentary – The audio is from producers Rick Morales and Jim Krieg and screenwriter Jeremy Adams. And if you know me, you know I love audio commentaries! In my opinion, every home release should come with this particular feature!

The approximate runtime comes in at 85 minutes and the movie has been rated R for strong bloody violence and language.
