“TRON Ares” Struggles During Weekend Box Office

The numbers are in, and as expected by many, TRON Ares failed to put up much of a fight at the weekend box office, even though it debuted atop the chart.

With how things currently are at the box office, a movie securing top placement doesn’t mean much because of the overall low numbers. So, yeah, even though the team behind TRON Ares can boast about being number one, there are a bunch of other factors that need to be considered. And once considered, they do seem to paint TRON Ares as yet another failure for Disney this year. Let’s get into it.

The latest movie in the long-running TRON franchise opened with an approximate $33.5 million against a reported production budget of $180 million. The current Rotten Tomatoes Score stands at 57% for the Critic Rating. However, it has a nice 87% for the Audience Score. So, while I don’t see the movie having an impressive hold during the second weekend, it will likely do well in the digital and home release markets.

Furthermore, with the movie starring Jared Leto, people did bring up how TRON Ares opened even lower than Morbius‘ $39 million back in 2022. As someone who keeps an eye on fandoms, I have seen certain fans bring up how they were excited about getting a new TRON movie but also bummed that it starred Leto when the project’s promotional campaign kicked into gear. And the current opening numbers only add support to their sentiments. However, having said that, the Audience Score seems to indicate that people who did decide to catch the film in theatres enjoyed it (regardless of what they might think of Leto).

I seem to be in the same boat. I liked TRON Ares for what it was. I really enjoyed the visuals and the soundtrack, even though the AI vs Human storyline was quite predictable, especially the part about AI developing self-awareness. With the story by David DiGilio and Jesse Wigutow, TRON Ares doesn’t push the envelope in its narrative space, but it still manages to be enjoyable. Again, for what it’s supposed to be.

Here’s my review!

In more disappointing news, award hopeful Kiss of the Spider Woman failed to open in the Top 10, instead coming in at position 12 with an estimated $0.91 million against a reported production budget of $30 million. That’s not good news for what’s supposed to be a major award play by Jennifer Lopez.

The current RT Scores of 76% (Critic) and 68% (Audience) further hinder the project from getting any attention once the award campaigns begin. And that’s disappointing because it’s a queer movie, and I have heard that queer actor Tonatiuh is amazing in his role as Luis Molina/Kendall Nesbitt. I hope Tonatiuh gets the recognition he deserves.

For those who might not know, Kiss of the Spider Woman is based on the stage musical adapted from the 1976 novel of the same name by Argentine author Manuel Puig. It’s a tragic story about an intimate bond formed between two prisoners named Luis Molina and Valentín Arregui.
