Indie publisher WhisperGames and developer Mistold Games have made the demo for the turn-based RPG Paraside: Duality Unbound available, in time for the October 2025 Steam Next Fest.

I’m a fan of turn-based tactics video games with the battle mechanic utilizing a chessboard or the grid system. That’s one of the many reasons that Paraside: Duality Unbound caught my attention. Another interesting feature is how the spaces can be turned over to change the battlefield, with your choices, in a way, impacting both sides. You’ll see what I mean as you continue reading and watch the trailer.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been invaded by an extradimensional threat. It’s up to you, the player, to lead the surviving forces to ensure humanity’s survival. As mentioned, the gameplay mechanic lets you turn over or flip the board. Such a mechanic is meant to help you “outmanoeuvre” enemies as well as explore areas for hidden secrets.

Being a tactics-style video game, of course, there’s a puzzle component involved in the progression system. Along with using the Flip mechanic, you will need to utilize the game’s Surround and Kill system, which has been inspired by the game of Go. It’s all about outsmarting your foes. Players will need to, in a sense, broaden their perspective and realize they are fighting for survival on two fronts instead of a single battlefield.

According to the dev team, with the game initially introducing players to the Flip mechanic, there are plans to possibly allow players to manipulate time, life, death, and other forces.

Here’s the action-packed trailer!

I do like the visuals, offering a nice mix of retro and modern. The character movements appear smooth. The Flip mechanic looks very cool. I want to try it out. The battle system seems to be a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, with attacks ranging from melee weapons to magic.

Having gone over the promotional images, the main characters seem to include Makaila and Gilbert. The recruitable agents include Shield, Arrow, and Phantom. The character stats cover Attack Power, Arcane, Defense, Movement, Attack Range, and Spread Radius. Makaila also seems to have something called ‘Duality Art’, which, I’m assuming, could be her version present on the ‘Flip’ side.

The currently available demo offers two distinct game modes. The Combat Mode guides you through the “tactical depth” of the Flip system. The Exploration Mode allows you to freely explore the world while gathering resources, interacting with a range of characters, defeating threats, and accepting side quests.

The Exploration Mode also comes with the ability to manage your base where you can recurit agents, assemble teams, research technologies, upgrade facilities, and unlock new dimensions of the Flip ability.

According to the dev team, while the two modes are separate in the demo, they will be “seamlessly integrated into the narrative” during the full release.
