DC Super Hero Girls Legends of Atlantis DVD Digital October release
DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis – DVD

DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis is the fifth film in the franchise. It follows Wonder Woman and her friends as they try to make their way to Atlantis to save the world from Siren. This enjoyable animated film is currently available to own on Digital and DVD.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own

If you have been keeping up with my coverage of DC Super Hero Girls, you already know I am a fan of this kid-friendly franchise. DCSHG: Legends of Atlantis features a new mission for the young heroes to save the world.

Here’s the official synopsis:

It seems like an uneventful day at school until the powerful Book of Legends is suddenly stolen from Super Hero High. In order to uncover the mystery, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Bumblebee and the rest of the Super Crew must journey through the depths of the ocean to Atlantis. There, the girls encounter Mera and Siren, the ocean-dwelling thieves, who prove to be a formidable match. In order to recover the stolen tome and return it to its rightful place, DC Super Hero Girls must band together and use their collective powers to successfully get back to land…and back to class!

DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis features some of the top voice actors in the industry including Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman), Tara Strong (Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy), Anais Fairweather (Supergirl), Mae Whitman (Batgirl), Teala Dunn (Bumblebee) and Stephanie Sheh (Katana) as they join forces to portray the youthful versions of some of the world’s best known Super Heroes.

DCSHG: Legends of Atlantis is the second Aquaman-inspired animated film from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. It makes sense for the studio to make kids grow interested in the upcoming live-action Aquaman film releasing in the US on 21 December 2018.

DCSHG: Legends of Atlantics opens with a scene which connects Mera, Siren, and Diana when they were kids. The encounter with the Trench had a negative impact on Diana as a child and I liked how the story had her address this issue when she meets Mera and Siren again in the present.

As for Mera and Siren, they maintained certain aspects from their comic book counterparts. I am not a huge fan of both characters. But I was okay with the roles they played in Legends of Atlantis.

I also liked how a story targeted at kids was able to convey an important message about bad people (even if they are related to you) getting what they deserve. Being a movie for kids, the writers could have had Siren apologize for what she had done, but they didn’t. Siren had to deal with the consequences of her actions.

The story had a number of plotlines which ended up coming together at the end. After Mera and Siren stole the Book of Legends from Super Hero High, Wonder Woman, Katana, Bumblebee, Beast Boy, Killer Frost, and the Flash go after them.

Meanwhile, Batgirl and Supergirl head out to find Atlantis and warn the king. The two are also dealing with their powers being switched due to Raven’s magic.

Back at Super Hero High, Harley Quinn tries to become Raven’s friend and helps her deal with the emotions messing up her magical power. With Tara Strong voicing both Raven and Harley, it was fun to see the actress interact with herself. The same goes for Erica Lindbeck who voiced both Mera and Siren.

Bumblee also had a bigger role to play in Legends of Atlantis. She showed off her prowess as a spy and was a self-sacrificing friend and teammate on more than one occasion. Basically, Bumblee is awesome!

As for the DVD, it came in your standard packaging. The front had the official art with the back having a synopsis and mentioning the extra content. The DVD’s 480i resolution and 1.78:1 aspect ratio was suitable for offering a clear picture.

There is a lot of color in the film and I had no issues with the video presentation. The same goes for the audio presentation with dialogue being clear.

Coming to the extra features, you get trailers for Daphne & Velma and Alex & Me. While the extras don’t offer any DC Super Hero Girls animated short, the DVD does include DC Super Hero Girls: Super Hero High TV special which aired back in 2016.

DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis is a fun movie which features an underwater adventure as the protagonists try to save both the land and sea. It also teaches a couple of lessons about friendship, how everyone brings different skills and abilities to a team, not judging others before you get to know them, and more.

Some thoughts and questions

  • I liked how they showed Mera and Aquaman having a connection.
  • I have no idea how the Book of Legends was found by Hawkgirl.
  • The Book of Legends does look a lot like the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead franchise.
  • It was fun to see the rest of the heroes on the surface using their powers and working together to save people.
  • Raven using her powers and showing how powerful her magical abilities are was amazing to witness!
  • I liked how Siren and Mera moved their legs like mermaids while swimming and our heroes swam in a more traditional manner.
