The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 1 Shows What a New Writer Can Do for Kamala Khan
After making her first appearance back in 2013, followed by her solo run in 2014, Ms. Marvel has quickly gone on to become one of the most famous Marvel comic book characters. Co-creator G. Willow Wilson helped develop Kamala a lot. Of course, some fans were worried when Wilson decided to leave the book. Well, turns out, writer Saladin Ahmed is more than up to the task if The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 1 is anything to go by.
I have to be honest, it felt kind of strange to not see Wilson as the writer on Kamala’s new solo series. But such a change was supposed to happen someday. The good news is, when I began reading The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 1, I wouldn’t have figured it wasn’t Wilson writing the plot. Ahmed understands Kamala’s core character, and I’m looking forward to seeing where he will take her next.
The first issue served as a reintroduction to the character for newer readers. We got a quick recap of how Kamala got her powers. We also saw her trying to spend some time with her friends while balancing her superhero duties.
Ms. Marvel shines when the story focuses on her personal life, and that is what The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 1 offered. I enjoyed our young hero’s interaction with her parents. As far as I can tell, her father seems to be ill and he doesn’t want her to continue fighting crime because of all the danger she continues to face. I think Kamala telling her parents she isn’t the only one with secrets in the family has to do with her baby nephew having superpowers.
There is also a quick mention of something happening between Bruno and Kamala. I don’t know if it was something romantic or not, but it will be interesting to see how their relationship develops considering Kamala’s religious upbringing.
The narrative in the first issue features an alien being telling Ms. Marvel’s story to their daughter. So, I guess Kamala is going to head to space soon. I can’t wait!
Artist Minkyu Jung does an amazing job of transitioning seamlessly through all of the emotions in the first issue. There are fight sequences, bonding time with friends, family arguments, and a big mystery. Everything has a dynamic feel to it through Jung’s art.
If you haven’t read any Ms. Marvel comic book, I recommend you give The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 1 a try and see for yourself why she is one of the best Marvel characters out there.
I still think Kamala’s first kiss was problematic, though.
