“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Breaks Box Office Records

The latest entry in the MCU debuted over the week, and while the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man: Brand New Day was expected to hit it big at the box office, it went on to surpass initial predictions.
SPOILER WARNING: This box office report contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Proceed with caution!
The fourth film in the current live-action Spider-Man film series easily swung to the top of the box office with an estimated $360 million domestically, beating the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame at $357.1 million from back in 2019. The fact that a solo Spider-Man film could place itself ahead of the mega-ensemble Avengers: Endgame is very impressive. And yeah, Sony isn’t letting go of Tom Holland as Peter Parker anytime soon. Sony is definitely going to encourage Holland to make a couple more Spider-Man solo films. There’s just way too much money on the table to not continue with Holland as the iconic webslinger.
As for the international numbers, SM: Brand New Day currently has a global gross of approximately $932 million against a reported production budget of $225 million, allowing it to place second behind Avengers: Endgame‘s whopping $1.22 billion.
Not only are the numbers impressive, but the 90% Critic and the 98% Audience Scores on Rotten Tomatoes showcase that Sony managed to please everyone across the board. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, SM: Brand New Day was a much-needed win after the recent MCU movies performing subpar at the box office.
SM: Brand New Day has again led to online spaces debating whether or not superhero movie fatigue is real, with many stating that people still crave superhero movies. Said movies just need to be good to succeed.
As far as my opinion goes, I think superhero movie fatigue does exist. Gone are the days when the MCU could successfully prop new characters in front of audiences. Thunderbolts was considered a good movie. But the audience at large just didn’t care about the roster. They also weren’t interested in the Fantastic Four.
Characters like Spider-Man have everlasting appeal. Thus, audiences flocked to theatres to watch him. The same will likely be the reaction to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026. Audiences like superheroes, but, as of now, they are only interested in consuming content about superheroes they care about. The fatigue relates more to the MCU trying (and failing) to make new characters outside the core MCU cast the narrative focus, regardless of how “good” the stories might be.
An interesting test would be the MCU’s take on the X-Men. As someone who watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I was quite “Huh?” about how Sadie Sink as Jean Grey was handled. The MCU seems to be going for a younger version of the X-Men and introducing them in a much darker anti-mutant setting than expected. Let’s see if the X-Men fandom can get on board with such a creative change.
As for the rest of the box office, The Odyssey fell to second place with an estimated $51 million. The global haul sits at around $912 million.
Toy Story 5 came in third place by collecting approximately $6.3 million. The animated film has grossed more than $1.06 billion worldwide. Yay!
Moana was in fifth place (with $5.3 million) behind Minions and Monsters ($5.8 million). Due to the live-action Moana having a disappointing global haul of around $261 million, here’s to hoping the upcoming Jumanji: Open World proves to be a hit for Dwayne Johnson come December 25, 2026. I really enjoyed the trailer for Jumanji: Open World and plan to watch the movie.
