Scott Derrickson and Marvel ‘Part Ways’ on Doctor Strange 2

Writer/Director/Producer Scott Derrickson and Marvel have ‘parted ways’ on Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness, per a statement by Derrickson on Twitter and a Marvel statement. 

Scott Derrickson, who is known for his writing and directing work on the first Doctor Strange and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, was slated to be the producer of the second Doctor Strange film.  Its scheduled release date is May 7th, 2021.

Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP.

Marvel released a statement to Variety that states the following: 

Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.

Both of their statements regarding their departure frames it as an amicable agreement between the two entities.  We may never know the details of these ‘creative differences,’ though details may emerge at a later time.  Right now they seem to be treating the separation with perfect PR tact, just as one would expect from a shake up with a Disney film. 

Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness will be closely tied to the MCU content on Disney+.  According to both Scott Derrickson and Kevin Feige, the film is going to have more of a horror feel to it. During the Marvel Hall H panel at SDCC 2019, the film’s announcement was met with a lot of excitement and provided an interesting trajectory for Stage 4.

The first Doctor Strange film is currently streaming on Disney+ alongside most of the other MCU films.  It received an Academy Award nomination for its visual effects, which were widely praised in reviews of the film.  The film grossed $667 million worldwide.
