‘Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula’ To Be Released August 7, 2020!

Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula

The sequel to Train to Busan, titled Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula, is scheduled to be released on August 7, 2020, in theaters across North America. It will be available for streaming on AMC’s subscription service in early 2021.

I’ve been very much looking forward to the Train to Busan sequel, but I’m a bit disappointed at the way this film is being released. North America is very much in the worst stretch of the pandemic to date (and, knock on wood, the worst there will be… but I have a feeling it will get worse) and they are dropping the film exclusively in theaters in just a little over a month. While it will be available on AMC’s streaming service Shudder next year, that does little to help those stuck at home during the pandemic right now. I kind of wish they’d either delay the whole film or release it on streaming early.

But I digress. This is what we’ve got right now. It may suffer at the box office through no fault of its own, but it’s coming. I hope history includes a footnote that it’s likely poor box office showing is due to the pandemic and not the film itself.

Unfortunately with this early of a release date, I can’t guarantee that it’ll get reviewed on this website as I don’t feel like many of us are in places safe enough to venture out to the theater quite yet, but I’m still excited for the film and look forward to the conversations we’ll have about it in early 2021. See you all then?

A press release sent out by Well Go states the following:

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in Train to Busan, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us Peninsula, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

The original Train to Busan will also apparently see a theatrical re-release later this month that will contain an exclusive look at the upcoming sequel. Pandemic isolation issues won’t get in the way of enjoying the original film (without the sneak peek, however) as it’s currently available to stream on Netflix.

The Netflix description reads as follows:

As a zombie outbreak sweeps the country, a dad and his daughter take a harrowing train journey in an attempt to reach the only city that’s still safe.

If you’re looking for some quarantine film viewing, I can’t recommend this film enough! The only problem is that you’ll then be in the same place I’m at where you’ll want to go out and see the sequel, but can’t because of this whole pandemic thing.

But misery loves company, so go watch the original film on Netflix and join me in this horribly frustrating conundrum.
