“A Quiet Place: Day One” Makes a Bang at the Box Office while “Inside Out 2” Passes $1 Billion!
Starring Lupita Nyong’o, A Quiet Place: Day One was able to make an impressive commotion at the box office with an approximate $53 million debut in the domestic market. And Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 stayed in first place, bringing the total worldwide gross to surpass $1 billion.
I have to be honest. I was a bit worried about how A Quiet Place: Day One would perform in theatres as the premiere date came near. Even though it was a prequel to a well-known franchise, the story revolved around a new set of characters. Not only that, but Hollywood doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to prequels and trying to continue certain franchises.
However, all my worries were thankfully laid to rest. Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One accomplished the biggest domestic as well as international opening for the franchise that began back in 2018. With $45.5 million from international markets, the movie has already collected close to $99 million.
With a reported production budget of approximately $67 million, the film is a resounding success for the studio.
Frankly, I wouldn’t mind the franchise continuing to tell a variety of stories set during the deadly alien invasion. I hope we get an installment that is set in a location other than the USA.
But yeah, hurray for Nyong’o. Fingers crossed her star continues to shine. I want to see her in more movies!
As for Disney’s current domination, Inside Out 2 fell around 43% to collect approx. $57.4 million, pushing the global haul across the $1 billion milestone. The movie was released on June 14, 2024, in the USA and has a reported production budget of $200 million.
Such a performance will strengthen the House of Mouse’s current focus on releasing sequels and more installments in already established franchises. As far as I know, the only original Disney/Pixar animated movie planned is sci-fi Elio and that’s supposed to come out later in 2025.
Let’s see how the upcoming Despicable Me 4 fares come July 3, 2024.
In not-so-great news for the talent involved, the Western live-action flick Horizon: An American Saga failed to appeal to viewers, coming in at number three with an approx. $11 million domestic debut. For those who might now know, Kevin Costner funded the film with his own money. Apparantly, four chapters are planned in the series, with the sequel currently scheduled for August 16, 2024. The estimated production budget for the two films is reported to be $100 million.
I mean, at this rate, it looks like Costner needs to brace himself for back-to-back flops. I still don’t understand why he didn’t construct Horizon: An American Saga as a prestigious Western TV show instead of deciding to premiere the franchise on the big screen, especially with Western content finding it challenging to make big bucks for quite some time now.
