Danai Gurira Joins the Cast of ‘Black Panther’
The upcoming addition to the MCU, Black Panther, is still a few years away but it already features a very impressive cast. Danai Gurira, who played Michonne in The Walking Dead, has joined the cast too!
The announcement was made during San Diego Comic Con 2016. We also got to know more about the characters that Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordon will be playing.
The stunning Nyong’o has been cast as Nakia, who also happens to be a love interest for the Black Panther. Jordon has been cast as Erik Killmonger. Gurira will be playing the role of Okoye. The Black Panther will continue to be portrayed by Chadwick Boseman who debuted in Captain America: Civil War. He was quite impressive in the movie and I’m looking forward to seeing what he will do in his own solo-movie.
The Black Panther movie will be released on the 6th of July, 2018.
Now, with all of that handled let’s move onto spoiler territory and dive into comic book lore.
Stop reading if you don’t want to be spoiled regarding what roles Nakia and Okoye might play.
For those of you who don’t know both Nakia and Okoya are Dora Milaje. In Wakandan history the Dora Milaje have a duty to protect the king of Wakanda and are also his potential wives. Females from different tribes were selected to be part of the Dora Milaje in order to ensure peace in the realm. When the Dora Milaje was reactivated after lying dormant for many years both Nakia and Okoya were recruited.
With the new order now having more of a ‘ceremonial’ position King T’Challa didn’t harbor any romantic feelings for them. While Okoya accepted this early on it was Nakia who dreamt of marrying the king someday. Her obsession grew so much that she abandoned the order and became a villainess named Malice.
Now I don’t know about you all but I wouldn’t mind seeing Nyong’o turn into a villain. At least that’ll give her more to do than just being a potential love interest for the main character.
