Death Is Perched Atop the Box Office with “Final Destination Bloodlines”

Surprising everybody, Final Destination Bloodlines debuted atop the box office with the biggest opening ever for the long-running franchise.
While I was excited to watch a new installment in the iconic Final Destination franchise (which began in 2000), I wasn’t expecting it to perform so well at the box office. Not only that, but it’s actually a good movie. We are surely going to get another film in the series soon. And at this point, I’m here for it!
Final Destination Bloodlines debuted to an approximate $51 million against a reported production budget of $50 million. As of writing this post, it has grossed $105 million worldwide. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the Critic Score stands at 92% with the Audience Score being 89%.
The predecessor, Final Destination 5 was released back in 2011. So, I’m glad that co-directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein were able to revive the franchise with a very strong story. I enjoyed how the narrative expanded the lore and connected FD Bloodlines to past installments. Making the main cast related to each other also helped make things feel fresh and raise the stakes as everyone tried to keep their family members safe from death.
My only gripe would be that I would have liked at least one of the death sequences to be related to modern technology. I want to side-eye the technology around me after leaving the theatre. But regardless, I recommend you watch Final Destination Bloodlines on the big screen, preferably with a group of friends or family.
As for a film that’s not performing well, we have the MCU’s Thunderbolts: The New Avengers. This is kind of tricky to talk about. The audience and critics enjoy the movie. However, all of that hype has continued to fail to materialize at the box office. Shouldering a reported production budget of $180 million, Thunderbolts: The New Avengers has managed to gross around $325 million globally after adding an approximate $16.5 million domestically over the weekend. It is, when it comes to the MCU, a flop. An enjoyable movie. But a box office failure.
Let’s see if the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps can turn things around for the MCU on July 25, 2025. The franchise sure needs to be saved… literally.
Sinners keeps doing well, adding an estimated $15.4 million to bring the total haul north of $316 million. If you still haven’t watched Sinners, what are you waiting for? Go experience it ASAP!
A Minecraft Movie made an additional approx. $5.8 million. The Jack Black and Jason Momoa-led movie has crossed an impressive $925 million globally.
Next up is Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2, with almost $4.9 million over the weekend. With a reported production budget of $80 million, the movie stands just a bit higher than $93 million worldwide. I decided to watch it a couple of days ago, and I have to say, I enjoyed it. I liked the brotherly chemistry between Affleck’s Christian Wolff and Jon Bernthal’s Braxton. Not only that, but a scene in a cowboy-themed bar featured some queer representation with two men dancing together without facing any homophobia. The Accountant 2 is far from being a queer-inclusive movie, but it was still nice to see that queer people existed in that particular world.
