The weekend box office numbers are out, with Now You See Me Now You Don’t (or Now You See Me 3) easily debuting in first place with The Running Man being the runner-up.

To be fair, I feel like there’s context behind Now You See Me 3 winning the latest weekend box office against The Running Man. While the Glen Powell-starring dystopian action movie is a remake of the original with Arnold Schwarzenegger from back in 1987, Now You See Me Now You Don’t is the third chapter in a somewhat successful (recent) franchise with a bunch of actors.

At least, Powell was able to put up a fight with a domestic opening of an estimated $17 million against the approximate $21 million debut by Now You See Me 3. I mean, they aren’t the best numbers, especially for Now You See Me 3, boasting the third-lowest opening compared to the two predecessors from 2013 and 2016, but hey, at least, they aren’t embarrassing.

The Running Man got a 65% Critic and 80% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Now You See Me 3 getting 59% Critic and 81% Audience Score.

However, as far as “success on page” goes, with Hollywood being all about the numbers, Now You See Me 3 has collected around $75.5 million globally against a reported production budget of $90 million, while The Running Man has grossed about $28.2 million worldwide against a reported production budget of… wait for it… a whopping $110 million. Like, WTH?!

I highly doubt The Running Man is going to succeed in breaking even and will, unfortunately, be a “flop” in Powell’s career, as well as for Edgar Wright.

I feel for Powell. The Running Man isn’t a bad movie. However, the dystopian takes in current films doesn’t really “hit” the way it did back in the day because now they seem a bit too close for comfort. Do read Angie’s review of The Running Man.

Other than that, in my opinion, I don’t see Powell as a solo action star. I like seeing him on the big screen, but for me, he works best when acting opposite a strong female co-actor. For example, how he was in Twisters. I would like to see him star in another major project again, whether an action flick or a much-needed romcom, but with a strong female co-lead or at least a very strong supporting role for his female co-star.

As for Now You See Me 3, the film introduced a new generation of tricksters to the lore played by Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt, getting to work with the OG cast. It’s an okay film. Kudos to the writing team for balancing a large cast, with Rosamund Pike clearly having fun in her villainous role. A fourth installment is reportedly in the works.

Talking about another new release, horror flick Keeper failed to impress audiences. From director Osgood Perkins and starring Tatiana Maslany, I was excited about it. However, having read some of the reviews, I think I’ll pass. The movie managed to open in 7th place with only $2.5 million.

Predator Badlands (which I enjoyed) fell to third place after experiencing an estimated 67% drop during the second weekend to snag around $13 million. The current global haul stands at $136 million against a reported production budget of $105 million. It’s still one of the more successful Predator live-action films. So, I really hope it gets to continue under Dan Trachtenberg.
