“Demon Slayer: The Movie – Infinity Castle” Wins The Weekend Box Office!

The Demon Slayer fandom won big this weekend. The latest animated feature Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle opened atop the box office with an impressive $70 million!
As a fan of anime, it’s always nice to see anime projects perform well on the big screen, especially when a project like Demon Slayer has shifted to movie releases to adapt the manga’s story instead of the traditional anime series on TV. Demon Slayer: The Movie – Infinity Castle is the first in a planned trilogy animating the ‘Infinity Castle’ arc from the manga.
The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime premiered back in April of 2019. It spanned 4 seasons, concluding the run in June of 2024. So, yay, to the Infinity Castle movie doing incredibly well to ensure fans get the remaining story adapted in animated form.
As of writing this piece, Infinity Castle – Part 1 has collected more than $468 million worldwide. It was released in Japan on July 18, 2025.
The Conjuring 4 dropped close to 69% during the second weekend. However, it still managed to hold onto second place with an estimated $26.1 million. It stands at more than $332 million globally against a reported production budget of $55 million. It’s a clear winner for Warner Bros., becoming the highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise, regardless of the huge second weekend drop.
Of course, the IP will continue. According to Deadline, a The Conjuring TV series is in the works over at HBO Max with Nancy Won being hired as Showrunner and Executive Producer. From what I can tell, there’s no news about whether the story will be set before or after the events of The Conjuring: Last Rites or if the Warrens will be involved.
As for the second major release this week, we got Downton Abbey 3: The Grand Finale coming in third place with an approximate $18.1 million. It’s a bit better than the $16 million opening for Downton Abbey 2: A New Era (2022). It also got a better Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, currently sitting at 91% and 96% respectively.
From creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis, the latest chapter in the Downton Abbey period drama focused on Lady Mary experiencing life in society as a divorced woman (very The Gilded Age) and preparing to take the reins of the Downton estate from her father.
As for the queer representation, I was glad to see Thomas Barrow continuing to be happy with his new life with actor Guy Dexter, especially after the lack of Thomas during the marketing. The two showed some nice little romantic moments throughout the movie. Guy wasn’t hesitant to show affection to Thomas in front of a crowd (which, wow, considering the time period!). Characters who were aware of their “friendship” didn’t make any homophobic remarks or give them a nasty look.
Other than that, Downton Abbey 3 also brought Sir Noël Peirce Coward into the picture as a friend of Guy and Barrow’s. He played a major role in helping Lady Mary find her footing in society after the news of her divorce.
With how things concluded, I would like a Downton Abbey 4. The third chapter felt it had a story to tell instead of being a nostalgia cash grab. And there’s still quite a bit of story left to be told.
Here’s my review!
In fourth place with approx. $11.5 million was The Long Walk, a live-action adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name from 1979. The cast includes Cooper Hoffman, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, and Mark Hamill.
Distributed by Lionsgate, it’s more than likely going to turn some profit for the studio due to having a reported production budget of $20 million. I might check it out later next week, but I’m not sure yet. Such a dystopian narrative doesn’t really appeal to me.
The Long Walk has a 90% Critic and 85% Audience Score on RT. So, that’s good.
This week saw two new re-releases entering the Top 10 list. Toy Story from 1995 placed No. 5 with an estimated $3.5 million. The Sound of Music (1965) celebrated its 60th Anniversary at No. 10 with an approx. $1.4 million.
