Disney’s animated movie The Sword in the Stone is ready to continue the story with Arthur’s Magical Kingdom – Volume 1 original graphic novel, releasing on January 27, 2026.

Being promoted as a continuation of the animated film in graphic novel form, The Sword in the Stone: Arthur’s Magical Kingdom – Volume 1 is by Michael Snow and Gabriel Valentin, with the illustrator being Lorenzo Colangeli. The story follows young Arthur’s journey, having now become the rightful ruler of Camelot. Of course, Merlin will be around as the new King goes on a “transformative journey”.

As shown on the cover, Madam Mim will play a role in the upcoming adventure. According to the promo material, she has returned from the “great beyond” and wants revenge. Not only is the sorceress on a dark mission, but she’s accompanied by new and powerful allies. The narrative will have Arthur grappling with the challenges of ruling a kingdom while also trying his best to stop the threat of an evil spell that can rewrite history and destroy Camelot. Merlin, being his “whimsical and wise” self, will help teach Arthur how you can’t use magic to solve every single problem. Arthur was chosen by the sword for a reason, after all!

Writer Gabriel Valentin shared, “The Sword in the Stone is one of, if not my favorite, Disney movies of all time! When I found out there was a possibility I could write something and play in that universe, I lost my mind! I couldn’t sleep for days and bugged every editor that would listen to me for a chance to tell a story that I hope lifelong “SITS” fans like myself will enjoy!”

Michael Snow said, “I grew up on Disney movies, and there was something I always loved about Sword in the Stone, both for the world of magic that said anything is possible, and the theme that anyone can be a hero. I’m super excited about the opportunity to bring that magic to a new generation and inspire young readers to find the hero inside. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to honor the original Sword in the Stone by creating something that felt like the film we grew up with, while also using Merlin’s magical fun to educate and inspire modern audiences. I hope this book is a joy for young and old for years to come.”

Illustrator Lorenzo Colangeli shared similar sentiments about being a childhood fan of the movie and how working on such a project was a childhood dream come true.

I wasn’t the biggest The Sword in the Stone fan while growing up, but I do remember enjoying watching it. Merlin vs. Madam Mim is iconic. Released back in 1963, the animated movie ends with Merlin ready to help Arthur become the great king he’s destined to be. So, I’m interested in seeing what the current creative team has in mind. However, I have to say that bringing back Madam Mim doesn’t seem like the most original idea, but hey, regardless, I’m here for more magical Merlin and seeing Arthur develop as a character.

From Papercutz, Disney’s The Sword in the Stone: Arthur’s Magical Kingdom – Volume 1 will be available in hardcover (9781545812983; $14.99) and paperback (9781545812402; $9.99) format for around 80 pages of content.

You can pick it up from wherever books are sold, including Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Bookshop.
