Dragon Ball Daima 1×07 Review: “Collar”
I wasn’t expecting Dragon Ball Daima season 1 episode 7, titled ‘Collar’, to be as fast-paced as it was. I’m glad the creative team seems to be moving things along at an enjoyable momentum instead of dragging out certain storylines.
Dragon Ball Daima episode 7 opened with Bulma trying to repair the spaceship that refused to take off in the previous episode. I liked how the writing team handled her frustration. Bulma knew she was under a time crunch with Vegeta, Piccolo, and Kibito waiting to regroup with Goku in the Demon Realm ASAP.
While her group’s frustration was understandable, I appreciated the writers deciding to focus on Bluma’s frustration instead. As a tech-minded genius, of course, she would be upset and angry in the manner she was. Bulma’s working with material she’s never seen before in her life. And though I think she could have figured out a solution eventually, the race against time wasn’t helping her. I liked seeing her standing up to Vegeta and letting him know that the Saiyan Prince didn’t get to be upset about the damaged spaceship because she had been doing all of the work.
Even though I knew that King Kadan had ordered Hybis to pick up Goku’s team from Earth, I wasn’t expecting Hybis to actually show up to do just that in the current episode. I also wasn’t expecting Bulma, Vegeta, and Piccolo to reach the Demon Realm in ‘Collar’ either. So, yes to the creative team progressing the story at a good pace. They still had to catch up to Goku, Shin, Panzy, and Glorio, but at least, some of the Z-Warriors were on the same planet now.
And the scene where Vegeta stepped in front of Bulma when Hybis arrived… my heart!
As for Goku’s group, they get delayed by the Gendarmerie on their way to fight the first Tamagami. It’s revealed that they were able to track them down due to Panzy’s collar. Every Majin in the Third Demon Realm had to wear an indestructible collar. Refusal to do so meant death. According to Panzy, taking off or breaking the collar was impossible and it expanded in size as the person grew older.
After making quick work of the Gendarmerie because the guards wanted to take Panzy away for questioning about the recent event that occurred in one of the villages, Glorio and Shin got a chance to demonstrate some of their fighting skills. I also liked how Goku could hide from the Gendarmerie who were searching their ship by using his teleportation technique.
Learning more about the collar allowed Panzy to showcase more of her personality. She didn’t want to continue with Goku and the rest because she knew the Gendarmerie would continue tracking her collar. Panzy was ready to say goodbye to the group for their safety. I liked seeing that aspect of her character.
However, Shin examined the collar and deduced that it was made from a material called Katchintite. It’s a metal only found on Planet Kaishin, where the Glinds used to live. According to Shin, his sister Dr. Arinsu probably created the collars. Being a Glind himself, Shin was able to destroy the collar around Panzy, freeing her from decades of enslavement. Apparently, the “spell” that Shin used, by yelling, “Pan Paka Paan!”, could be chanted by anyone. So, I take it we will get to see Shin teaching it to the other inhabitants as well so they can stand up to King Gomah.
The scene between Panzy and Shin led to Panzy asking for his real Demon World name. Turns out, Shin’s birthname was Nahare. And though I like that name, I will continue to use the name Shin for consistency purposes and also because it seems like the anime will be sticking to the name Shin, too.
The closing moments of ‘Collar’ had Goku’s team reach the encampment housing Tamagami Number 3 (because he possessed the three-star Dragon Ball). The being was a giant robot armed with a huge hammer. No one’s been able to ever defeat him. From what I could understand, once challenged, you were unable to quit. So, it’s either victory or death.
The next episode will have Goku fight against Tamagami Number 3. Obviously, Goku will win, but I know it’s still going to be a visually enjoyable battle. With two more Tamagami left to defeat, I hope at least one of them is fought by Vegeta or Piccolo.
