Cinephobia Releasing will be bringing the award-winning French queer romantic drama Lie with Me to North American audiences come February 15, 2024.

The upcoming Lie with Me film is an adaptation of the award-winning novel Arrête avec tes mensonges by author Philippe Besson. The narrative follows an acclaimed author named Stéphane Belcourt (Guillaume de Tonquédec) returning to his hometown and having to deal with a whole lot of feelings after meeting the son of his secret past lover Thomas. The movie has been directed and co-written by Olivier Peyon.

The film held its North American Premiere at the American French Film Festival and went on to have screenings at numerous other festivals including Frameline, Newfest, and BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival. It won the “Audience Award for Best Feature” at the Miami OUTshine Film Festival and received the award for “Best Narrative Feature” at the ImageOut: The Rochester LGBT Film Festival.

Here’s the trailer!

Judging from the promotional content I can see why Lie with Me was met with such critical acclaim. The story does seem quite engrossing with Stéphane Belcourt trying to come to terms with a romantic teen relationship that never received proper closure and treading carefully as Thomas’ son Lucas (Victor Belmondo) continues to inquire about his deceased father.

The scene where Lucas told Stéphane that Thomas used to only brighten up whenever he saw him on TV… my heart!

The way numerous queer romances were cut short due to homophobia in the past. Sigh!

And the fact that similar unfortunate queer romantic tales continue to exist around the globe. Double sigh!

The movie’s promotional material describes it as “erotic, tender, romantic, and heartbreaking” and you know what? I want to watch it. Even though I’m not a huge fan of emotionally gut-wrenching queer movies, I can still appreciate a well-made tragic queer movie. And Lie with Me seems to fit the bill. French films do know how to deliver when it comes to the dramatic romance genre.

Lie with Me has an approximate Runtime of 98 minutes. It will be made available on DVD and VOD come February 15, 2024.

Will you watch it?
