One of the recent, not to mention super popular, online archives of fanfiction is the easy-to-use WattPad, which makes reading fics from mobile devices easier than with many other hosting sites. When Wattpad asked us to rec some fanfiction, we jumped at the chance to have a legitimate excuse to drown ourselves in fanfic. As fanfic lovers, a few members of the Geekiary team all too were happy to test out WattPad and share some of the best fics we found there. Myself, Undie Girl, and Farid dove into our favorite fandoms on WattPad and gathered this list of fics just for you.
Please note: all authors gave permission for us to link to their fics.
Title: Entering Orbit
Fandom/Pairing: Star Trek AOS, Kirk/Spock
Summary: Jim escapes to Iowa to avoid the media frenzy following the Narada incident, but a late-night miscommunication results in Spock turning up on his front porch.
Recommendation Notes: I tend to not reread fic, but I’ve read this one all the way through at least three times. I can count the number of fics I’ve reread on one hand, but this one deserved TWO rereads. It’s just that good. The characterization is spot on and the relationship develops very naturally. I highly recommend it for anyone who already loves AOS Kirk/Spock or who might be Kirk/Spock curious.
Title: Possibly, Maybe
Fandom/Pairing: Supernatural, Destiel
Summary: Dean had no idea he’d meet the love of his life in a fender bender, but that’s how it happened.
Recommendation Notes: Yes, it’s another Museaway fic. I’m usually not a fan of AUs but she’s one of my favorite fic authors, so of course I’m giving this one a chance. This one is also a WIP, so if you need some Destiel to get you through the summer hiatus, this is a great one.
Fandom/Pairing: Sherlock, John/Sherlock
Summary: To think a soldier could be brought so low by something as innocent as water.
Disease makes fools of us all.
Recommendation Notes: I’d sort of fallen out of reading Sherlock fanfiction since it’s been so long since we had new canon material (we are the most patient fandom in the world, I swear to God), but this fic sucked me back in. The writing has an easy flow to it, the plot is simple but charming, and the characterization is spot on. This is the type of hurt/comfort fic you can sink into after a long stressful day and just enjoy. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on this writer because this was an excellent introduction to their work.
Fandom/Pairing: Supernatural, Destiel
Summary: Spoilers up to 9×9
Recommendation Notes: Kevin’s death sucked. Zatnikatel managed to help us cope with this great fic. I need to put a disclaimer with this rec, though, because Zat and I are acquaintances so this rec isn’t just plucked out of nowhere. In fact I’d been subtly encouraging her to post to Wattpad for a while and I’m super grateful that she did. When it comes to canon-compliant, emotional, and tastefully erotic stories, she’s one of the best. This story hits all those points on the head and provides a soothing balm for the pain we all felt after Kevin’s death.
Fandom/Pairing: Marvel’s Agent Carter – Peggy/Angie
Summary: When Angie’s cousin gambles with money that wasn’t his to lose, he calls the only person he can think of to help him. Angie’s not exactly keen on doing it, but she did teach him to shoot pool after all, she’s certainly better than his sorry ass. Only problem is, Angie’s not about to get her thumbs broken over some mobster’s money.
Recommendation Notes: This was my first foray into fanfiction on Wattpad, and as is often the case when trying something new it took me a while to get the lay of the land. Honestly I was starting to despair when I came across this amazing fic by Anamatics. I’m kind of obsessed with Agent Carter right now, and I’ve read some good fic in the fandom, but this was the first one that made me want to reach into the computer and hug the author. This story wonderfully delves into the psyche of a character that I desperately want to know more about – Angie Martinelli – and the way the author uses Angie’s story to touch on the horrors of homophobia at in the 1940s is fascinating. I could probably rave about this fic for weeks and I still wouldn’t do it justice. Just read it, okay.
Fandom/Pairing: Doctor Who – Gen
Rating: Teen Audiences
Summary: Terra is dying when a strange man in a blue box comes to comfort her. One moment she has no idea who he is, and the next she remembers – she’s known the Doctor her whole life. And he’s going to make sure she’s never alone.
Recommendation Notes: I’ve read a lot of Doctor Who fanfiction – I might have even written some in my youth (you’ll NEVER find it) – and while I enjoy most of it, I’ve never been a massive fan of the original companion stories. Penderruth’s “Deleted” has forced me to re-evaluate that prejudice, because this is a beautiful story that perfectly encapsulates the tragedy that is the Doctor’s existence and it just happens to be an original companion fic (of sorts). “Deleted” is a fantastic standalone short story that fits neatly into the canon mythology. There’s also a second fic that expands on the protagonist Terra’s life, which I haven’t had time to read yet but is on the top of my list. “Deleted” is easy to read, reasonably well written and, most importantly, it gave me a lot of FEELINGS, which is really all I want from good fanfiction. Definitely worth checking out.
Title: The Sterek Story
Fandom/Pairing: Teen Wolf, Sterek
Summary: The story of how Derek Hale and Stiles Stillinski from Teen Wolf became to be soulmates.
Recommendation Notes: It was Sterek that got me into reading fanfics, and I haven’t looked back ever since. I know the Sterek pairing isn’t ‘officially’ canon but that hasn’t stopped talented writers from creating works that make you think that Stiles and Derek were indeed meant for each other. “The Sterek Story” shifts between Stiles’ and Derek’s P.O.V as they share how they feel about each other and realize they are mates. It’s quite a nice read, and you’ll get to meet a lot of familiar characters that aren’t part of the Teen Wolf TV series anymore.
Title: Harry Potter’s Twin Sister
Fandom/Pairing: Harry Potter
Summary: Annabelle Dumbledore-Potter, the only female student of Durmstrang Institute, is up for a shock in her fourth year, when her ‘uncle’ Albus informs her that she will now be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Not only that, but she has a twin brother that she has never heard of: Harry Potter. Follow her adventures at Hogwarts as she and her brother find out their destiny and all the hearts she wins along the way.
Recommendation Notes: The first ever fanfic I wrote involved Harry Potter and I getting admitted to Hogwarts and fighting Voldemort. “Harry Potter’s Twin Sister” is an awesome read which, as the name implies, introduces Harry’s twin sister Annabelle Dumbledore-Potter. I loved the humorous take of the author as Anna got to meet new people, her brother, and his friends. There’s a love story in there, but it also has its dark moments.
Summary: Kaya Millard is a young woman who is hiding a deep secret from her family. She’s a mutant, an animal shape-shifter with the ability to heal quickly. To make matters even worse, Magento has an eye on her, and he will do anything to get her to join the Brotherhood and help take over the White House, and mankind. However, Professor Xavier sends an ally to help Kaya. Wolverine shows up and tries to get her to come back to the school, and join the X-Men, but it proves harder than he expected. Soon they become acquainted and begin to fall for each other. But can Wolverine convince her to join the X-Men and save mankind, or will she turn her back on him and all man kind and finally give into Magneto?
Recommendation Notes: While I enjoy reading fanfics that focus on characters I already know from canon, I’m not against reading something where an original character is the hero or heroine. “A Future Unknown” is fanfic that puts the spotlight on an original character, Kaya Millard, a mutant shape-shifter. I liked the author’s writing style as he teamed Kaya with Wolverine and explained Magneto’s evil plot. A must read for X-Men fans who don’t mind Wolverine getting romantic with an original female character.
Fandom/Pairing: Harry Potter, Dramione
Summary: He was left broken, with no hope of ever putting himself together, until she entered his life. He never thought that life could be so rich and that she could make him feel the way she does. This is a love story about two people who were drawn together to fix each other, in ways that they never even knew they were broken. This is a Draco/Hermione love story.
Recommendation Notes: I’ve always been curious about fans romantically pairing Draco and Hermione together. I didn’t see a connection between the two in the books, but I kind of saw something there in the film series. Then again I saw a romantic connection between Harry and Draco in the films, too. Anyway, Dramione is a thing in the Harry Potter fandom, and I like the relationship because it pairs two characters from completely different backgrounds together. It’s the classic ‘hate-turns-to-love’ cliche that many enjoy. “Hermione and Draco, a Forbidden Fantasy” takes place after Voldemort’s defeat and something deep inside Hermione and Draco awakens as they come close to each other.
