Gotham 4×13 and 4×14 Review: ‘A Beautiful Darkness’ & ‘Reunion’ – So Much Nygmobblepot!

Gotham Season 4 Beautiful Darkness Reunion Nygmobblepot review
Lots of Nygmobblepot in ‘A Beautiful Darkness’ and ‘Reunion’

Gotham season 4 episodes 13 ‘A Beautiful Darkness’ and 14 ‘Reunion’ were very Nygmobblepot heavy! This show is a delightful mess of crazy, and I hope it at least gets another season if not more.

After recasting Poison Ivy for the second time, I’m happy the writers of Gotham gave her an arc. ‘A Beautiful Darkness’ and ‘Reunion’ showed her wreaking havoc in the city. While she’s clearly crazy and does kill a lot of people, there’s still some sense of humanity left inside her when it comes to Kitty Selina. But I’m not sure if she’ll spare Kitty Selina’s life the next time she meets, though.

Also, their encounter did show the audience that Kitty Selina is a different kind of hero on Gotham. When the time demands it, she does what’s right, without there being an agenda of making her dead parents happy (like Baby Bruce) or wanting the city to be better (Jim Gordon). She just gets up and does the right thing, without wanting to reach some sort of goal, even if it means putting her life in danger.

While Baby Bruce and Jim also had a lot to do, I’m not interested in any of their current arcs right now. We knew Baby Bruce was going to come back to his senses and he did. He even apologized to Alfred. As for Jim, he was unable to capture Ivy and still has to deal with Sofia Falcone. It’s not necessarily boring stuff, it just dims in comparison to the all the crazy happening onscreen.

And nothing’s crazier than the mess that’s Nygmobblepot! It’s full of issues, but it works because it’s on a show like Gotham. I wasn’t expecting all the Nygmobblepot development in ‘A Beautiful Darkness’ and ‘Reunion.’ Oswald’s the only one who’s been able to see the real Ed. After Ed makes a short visit to Arkham, Oswald knows it was Ed’s Riddler persona that made him come. So, Oswald, through a letter, talked to the Riddler and in the end, was able to make that part of Ed’s consciousness appear.

The Riddler/Ed might not be able to return Oswald’s romantic feelings, but who cares at this point, right? Nygmobblepot is supposed to be an unhealthy comic book-esque relationship and this show nails that impressively. I can’t wait to see what those two accomplish now after partnering up.

Some thoughts and questions:

  • Give Barbara something to do! The show is wasting a very interesting character.
  • Sofia Falcone turning the tables on Lee was awesome.
  • Yes, to Harvey holding a chicken in Baby Bruce’s hallucination.
  • I liked the little Easter Egg showing Jim with a mustache in Baby Bruce’s vision.
  • I wonder what Jerome is planning.
  • Considering the ratings are stable but not great, I hope we get a fifth season.

What did you think of Gotham this week? Did you like all the Nygmobblepot in ‘A Beautiful Darkness’ and ‘Reunion’? Let us know.
