His Dark Materials Teaser Gives First Look at Upcoming Series

His Dark Materials teaser

We’ve done our waiting, and now the BBC has granted us a very brief sneak peek at their upcoming adaptation for Phillip Pullman’s best-selling His Dark Materials trilogy. The His Dark Materials teaser was released this morning.

The His Dark Materials teaser is short, as most teasers are, offering us very little other than a glimpse of the various cast members. We don’t see any daemons in this teaser, so we can’t yet judge how good the effects for the series may be, but at the very end of the clip there is a flash of the alethiometer. The flash was so quick that I could barely get a screengrab, which is why the image accompanying this article is blurry and awful.

“We wanted fans to have a tiny glimpse of His Dark Materials,” said exec producer Jane Tranter. “As with Lyra, there are many more worlds to discover as we start upon this epic journey.”

BBC’s His Dark Materials adaptation stars Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Clarke Peters as Dr. Carne, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby. What this teaser offers us is our first looks at these iconic characters. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, we’ve yet to see a daemon, nor do we have a release date. It ends with simply “Coming Soon”.

According to Deadline, this series is one of the biggest in scope and one of the most expensive British dramas to date. It will adapt all three novels in the trilogy – Northern Lights (The Golden Compass for us in the States), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass – but I believe it’s not yet clear how the books will be split. Presumably it will be one book per season, as seems to be the norm for other book-to-series adaptations. (And remember, they’ve already greenlit a season two!)

Check out the His Dark Materials teaser below, and let us know what you think!
