Talk about content I will be keeping an eye on! The Motherland: Fort Salem trailer is something you should all watch. Who wouldn’t be interested in queer military witches?

While Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem doesn’t have a premiere date, yet, I’m very interested in consuming the 10-episode first season whenever it airs. One of the reasons I’m looking forward to watching this show is because it’s from Eliot Laurence. He also created Claws (a TV series I love).

Here’s the trailer!

The official description reads:

Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution over 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the government to fight for their country, Motherland: Fort Salem follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world—but with supernatural tactics and weapons.

I’m all for magical beings doing their part to protect their country and ordinary civilians. I’m also a fan of witches and wizards using nonmagical technology and equipment. It is one of the reasons I still think Harry Potter or Hermione Granger should have decided to use muggle guns against Voldemort’s forces (but oh well).

Freeform president Tom Ascheim shared, “We’re so excited to be able to tell this story rich with female empowerment, complex storytelling, and an incredibly creative canon … While set in an alternative universe, Motherland: Fort Salem will continue the authentic and issues-driven storylines that our network is known for, and what our audience has come to expect.”

The cast includes Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton, and Amalia Holm. I’m familiar with Hickson’s work due to Aftermath. She was one of the best things about that sci-fi series.

Motherland: Fort Salem is produced by Freeform Studios and Gary Sanchez Productions. Will Ferrell, McKay and Kevin Messick serve as EPs for Sanchez. Eliot Laurence, Maria Maggenti and Steven Adelson will also executive produce the series. The pilot was directed by Steven A. Adelson.
