Fans of Marvel Comics have a new video game to get excited about. From NetEase Games and Marvel Games the upcoming Marvel Rivals is a PVP shooter that lets you play as your favorite fictional characters fighting another superhero or supervillain team.

While I’m not the biggest fan of shooter-like PVP games, I do have to say that I’m kind of digging the visuals and certain gameplay elements of Marvel Rivals. The title has been inspired by Overwatch and, from what I can assume, is trying to appeal to a specific audience (think Fortnite and similar online shooting game players).

Developed by NetEase Games, Marvel Rivals is ready to let you choose from an exciting roster of characters. The current team members cover the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, and more. The characters include Spider-Man, Magik, Black Panther, Loki, Storm, Scarlet Witch, Hulk, and others.

The gameplay has been described as fast-paced with a focus on destructible environments. Apparantly, the powers of the characters you select can change the battlefield to your advantage. The locations include Asgard, Tokyo of 2099, and a bunch of arenas that will be familiar to Marvel fans.

Not only that, but certain characters will be able to team up to unleash powerful combo attacks. For example, the trailer shows Groot and Rocket Raccoon using the Team-Up Skill mechanic to perform a combo. Hulk can unleash his Gamma energy to charge Iron Man’s armor for more damage to enemies.

I wonder what Storm and Black Panther’s combo attack will be like.

Along with utilizing special skills and unique powers, players can craft makeshift weapons to attack their enemies. I mean, I don’t know how I feel about Storm running around with a gun, but let’s see what these makeshift weapons end up being.

The premise of Marvel Rivals involves multiple universes colliding in the Timestream Entanglement due to a clash between Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from the year 2099. The threat pushes heroes and villains from across the multiverse to face each other as well as go after both Dooms before one of them achieves domination.

Here’s the action-packed trailer!

Judging from the trailer, it looks like the game will launch with the Hulk, Doctor Strange, Groot, Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon, Namor, Magik, Black Panther, Loki, Spider-Man, Peni Parker, and Luna Snow as playable characters.

Storm, Scarlet Witch, Magneto, Mantic, Peter Quill, and the Punisher will likely follow during special event releases of some kind. And yes, that indeed was Galactus’ daughter Galacta in the trailer.

It also looks like characters can enter some kind of powered-up form for a limited time (Magik transforming into her Darkchylde form being an example). As a Storm fan, I’m looking forward to seeing what Ororo Munroe’s powered-up version will look like.

A Closed Alpha Test for Marvel Rivals will be conducted in May of this year. You can sign-up for upcoming Beta Tests by visiting the official website www.marvelrivals.com.

You can also follow the game on Discord, Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Marvel Rivals will be free-to-play. It will be released for the PC via Steam and Epic Games.

Of course, because of the nature of such a game, you can expect certain in-game purchases including skins, accessories, and other cosmetics. I just hope it’s able to offer an engaging gameplay session without the need to spend a single dollar.
