NYCC 2024: “Wynonna Earp” Rides Again

It’s been three years since Wynonna Earp rode off into the sunset, but fans hoped that wouldn’t be the last they saw of their beloved characters. And their patience paid off this year. Not only is there a new film, Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, which can be streamed on Tubi, but there is also an audio series from Audible, Wynonna Earp: Tales from Purgatory. And that is what the cast returned to New York Comic Con to promote.

While Vengeance is set to roughly coincide with the “real time” gap of about two years since the end of the series, Tales from Purgatory is intended to slot between the two, and tell stories of what happened in those two years. Interestingly, even though Vengeance came out first, they found out about Tales from Purgatory first. Per series creator Emily Andras, Audible actually approached her about the possibility of an audio-only season 5. But she wanted to keep a potential season 5 on ice and hold out for a continuation of the television show.

Instead, she opted to do some stories that they would never have been able to pull off on screen. For example, one of the episodes of Tales from Purgatory involves Doc Holliday’s (Tim Rozon) first-ever plane ride, something that would not have been possible on the show’s budget. (“We couldn’t even afford a pigeon,” Andras joked.)

Tales of Purgatory also includes a script written by Rozon himself, who said he has been begging Andras to let him write something basically since the beginning of the series. Apparently, he’s gone to her a lot with pitches and theories, and he finally got to write his own script. He was excited at the possibility of telling stories that fans (affectionately dubbed “Earpers”) would love.

Other things fans can look forward to in these audio episodes include some backstory on Nedley, what was going on with Nicole while Waverly was missing for 18 months, and meeting iconic figures like Wyatt Earp and Calamity Jane.

Rozon and fellow cast members Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna) and Katherine Barrell (Nicole) talked a lot on both the panel and in the press room about how easy it was to slip back into their characters, but how challenging it was not being able to rely on certain things to help their performance. Barrell mentioned how weird it was to be recording an intimate scene with Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Waverly), yet kissing the back of her hand. Scrofano lamented that it was hard for her to “sound more intimidating” because she didn’t have her gun.

But as they had recently filmed Vengeance, they weren’t far removed from their characters, so it wasn’t difficult to remember what it was like. Rozon said he had some trouble at first, but his first scene with Scrofano made everything come back to him.

In addition to the panel and press room, Audible hosted an offsite event for Tales from Purgatory. Offsites are pretty rare at NYCC, so it was fun to go. Held at Porchlight, just a few blocks from the convention center, Andras and the cast mingled with press and fans while a bluegrass band played. I normally go to these things for the food (which was really good, if you’re an NYC local, check them out), but I will say that this cast was amazing, as they spent most of their time there actually talking to and taking photos with fans. Usually, when you go to these, the talent is whisked off to a closed-off VIP area and don’t interact with anyone else. So I have serious respect for them just for that.
