“Storm” Comic Book Issue 3 “Chapter 3: Impending Doom” – Review

Storm issue 3 review

The third issue of the current Storm solo book series, titled ‘Impending Doom’, was about the incoming doom in Ororo’s life in more than one way.

After meeting Doctor Voodoo in the previous issue, the latest chapter allowed Storm a bit of a breather as she tried to deal with her current predicament. Written by Murewa Ayodele with art by Lucas Werneck and colors by Alex Guimaraes, I liked Ororo’s interaction with Jericho as we got to learn about how death was coming for her.

Jericho was able to make a deal with an ancient spirit to rid Ororo’s body of radiation poisoning and turn her into the healthiest person on Earth (for now). However, the catch was that Ororo was not to use her mutant abilities for seven whole days. Of course, Storm’s more than capable of functioning and being a powerful hero without her mutant powers. Depending on the situation, she’s more deadly with a knife than being able to summon the elements.

But the realization of death sprites (little butterfly-like spirits that Jericho could see due to being a necromancer) swarming around her weighed heavily on the Mutant Goddess. We know Storm’s not afraid of death. But that doesn’t mean she’s going to welcome it with open arms.

Ayodele being ready to ring the death knell for the Avatar of Life is an interesting creative choice. I’m looking forward to seeing how he will go about “killing” Storm (who is known to fight until the end) and then work toward her “rebirth” arc and how her journey will play into Ororo’s role in the larger Marvel Comics landscape.

Storm did mention wanting to reconnect with her magical lineage and be able to summon the forces of nature via magic. So, yeah, that’s definitely happening down the line. As it should. Fans have waited for decades to see Ororo tap into her birthright.

While on hiatus from her Omega-level powerset, Storm decided to spend the required week with her family, aka the Uncanny X-Men team being led by Rogue. The reunion was nice to see. However, I was surprised at how quickly the narrative decided to go through the seven-day break by using a montage of Ororo’s training session with Logan.

By the end of issue 3 of Storm we were at day six. I understand wanting to move the story along, but that felt rushed just to add more drama during the seventh day. Also, I would have liked to see a montage of her spending time with other characters during her break instead of just Logan.

Talking about Ororo and Logan sleeping together, their moment of intimacy did cause quite a stir in the Storm fandom. Frankly, I don’t really have an opinion on the matter. The narrative has made it clear (and it was stated in the chapter) that while Ororo is an Omega-Level Mutant Goddess, her heart is still human and she goes through human emotions, including making mistakes and taking missteps. She wasn’t proud of sleeping with Logan in such a manner, but considering what she was going through, her emotions took over due to being so close to someone she had already shared intimacy with and had known for a very long time. Logan felt familiar in her turbulent emotional state. Heck! I might have done the same thing if I were in her shoes. Just saying.

Anyway, Ororo’s stay with Rogue and the rest of the X-Men was cut short due to Doctor Doom or God Emperor Doom sending a message via a giant sassy razorbill. He wanted to talk to Ororo about mutant matters. And Ororo decided to accept the invitation due to being the voice of the mutants and also a member of the Avengers. She wanted to know what Victor had in mind.

And yes, I caught Rogue bringing up how Victor had a soft spot for women named “Storm” – Ororo Munroe as well as Sue Storm.

With Ororo making her way to meet Victor, I think she still has a day of not being allowed to use her powers. So, it will be interesting to see their dynamic. Will he sense something off about Storm and try to push her to use her mutant abilities? I wouldn’t be surprised if Victor’s able to see the death sprites, too.

Also, I want to know more about the ancient spirit Jericho made the deal with to save Storm’s life.
