Hold on to your hats, everyone, because Free! Take Your Marks is coming to US theaters for one night only this March!
I can’t believe I’m only learning this now, considering how much I’ve been looking forward to this movie (and how often I stalk the not-so-reputable sites looking for it), but thanks to Funimation Films and Asahi Broadcasting, Free! Take Your Marks will screen in select theaters across the US on March 14. It will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles and be preceded by a special pre-show that includes an exclusive animated greeting and introduction to the film by the characters as well as a movie photo session, allowing fans to take and post pictures and become a part of the event.
Said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and founder of Funimation:
Free! has been an immensely popular franchise since Day 1 and encompasses a broad cross-section of our fans. All of whom have been anxious to see more. Our event style release of ’Free! -Take Your Marks-’ provides fans not only a unique opportunity to experience Free! for the first-time ever on the big screen but also a chance to quench their thirst for the show ahead of this summer’s premiere of Season 3. I encourage Free! fans to purchase tickets in advance to guarantee they don’t miss-out on this special one-night-only event on March 14th.
Tickets will be available for pre-order starting February 13 on the event’s official website.
Free! Take Your Marks takes place after season 2 of the anime, just before Haru, Makoto, Sousuke, and Rin’s graduation from high school. It was the third Free! film released in 2017, following two compilation films centered around Iwatobi and Samezuka, which retold the events of the anime as well as featuring additional content. Funimation has acquired the home video distribution rights for all three films, plus the prequel High Speed! -Free! Starting Days-. Release dates will be announced later.
I’ll tell you, I’m beyond excited to see Take Your Marks in theaters, but I cannot wait for these to come out on DVD! All four movies, plus the announcement of a season 3 that will premiere this summer? 2018 is a good year to be a Free! fan.
