Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming Indian Period Drama series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The series will debut on May 1, 2024.

Even though I might end up not enjoying it, I’m still excited about watching Heeramandi due to the creative team attached. If you’re familiar with Bollywood, you will likely have heard the name Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He’s known for creating content that features grand sets, a dreamlike aesthetic, and telling epic stories of love, loss, and the human spirit.

The upcoming streaming show has Bhansali’s signature. You get to see rich people living lavish lifestyles. However, the narrative will be rooted in the true story of the Independence Movement against the British Raj during the 1940s. The trailer brings forth a world ruled by courtesans or tawaifs and how their influence over certain politically important men made them a threat.

With tensions rapidly increasing against the British Raj and the inevitable geo-political separation rushing near, certain tawaifs will see no other choice but to take part in the revolution. Judging from the trailer, the narrative will include storylines about the old and new blood in (what’s considered) the world’s oldest profession butting heads, wanting to preserve centuries of culture, sexism, misogyny, racism, political deceit, and more. There’s also some queer representation going on.

Check it out for yourself!

The cast includes Manisha Koirala as Mallikajaan, Sonakshi Sinha as Fareedan, Aditi Rao Hydari as Bibbojaan, Richa Chadha as Lajjo, Sanjeeda Sheikh as Waheeda, Sharmin Segal as Alamzeb, and more.

For those who might not know, the title Heeramandi comes from the actual ‘Heera Mandi’ or the ‘Diamond Market’ in the Walled City of Lahore, Pakistan. It’s the red-light district of the region. The neighborhood has a rich history that goes all the way back to the Mughal rule and then being transformed into a more prostitution-based institution after British colonization.

Over time, due to sex work being illegal in Pakistan, the place has become a cultural landmark for Lahore with the area now housing a food street and other shops while preserving some of the original aesthetic.

Are you excited about watching Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar on Netflix come May 1, 2024?
