Wednesday Webcomics: “With Butterflies in Her Hair”
Jenny-Toons, the creator of Our Universe, outshines expectations in With Butterflies in Her Hair, a cosmic horror story about desire and obsession.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jenny-Toons back in May about her webcomic Our Universe. She never fails to impress me with her imagination and thought-provoking narratives. Our Universe shows the fear of not knowing everything about a loved one, friend, or significant other. The narrative in With Butterflies in Her Hair focuses on how obsession can destroy ourselves and everyone around us.
After her husband, Troy Lexington, sacrifices her to summon a demon, Priscilla is temporarily resurrected to take care of unattended tasks and finish her Will. Troy has spent all his life studying demonology hoping to one day gain the demon Adoniem’s favor. However, Adoniem is fond of Priscilla, visiting her dreams and singing to her. Jealous, Troy decides to kill her to get the demon’s attention. But then she returns, which further drives Troy to madness.
Troy and Priscilla’s marriage is one of convenience. Having been childhood friends, Priscilla decides to spend the rest of her life with him. She enjoys hearing him talk about his research, and she’s content with spending her time painting. When the demon chooses Priscilla, their marriage disintegrates. Troy, willing to do anything to meet Adoniem, soon learns that a demon’s secrets are better left unknown.
This webcomic brims with astonishing imagery and narrative turning points. Both the storytelling and art style provides enough tension and horror to keep you clicking onto the next episode. From the character expressions to subtle images like a shattered wedding photo, Jenny-Toons knows how to wield a beautifully crafted story.
With Butterflies in Her Hair is available to read on WebToon.
