Trailer Released for Queer Family Drama “Housekeeping for Beginners” Before January 2024 Debut
The trailer for the upcoming queer family drama Housekeeping for Beginners by writer and director Goran Stolevski has been released. Though the movie will explore a heavy subject surrounding queer families, there’s definitely a lot of warmth showcased in the trailer and I think the ending will be a happy one.
Goran Stolevski is a name people interested in watching queer media should become familiar with. He’s the writer and director behind the gay love story Of an Age and his latest queer-centric movie Housekeeping for Beginners/Domakinstvo za pocetnici was selected as North Macedonia’s official entry for the 96th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award (Oscars 2024) in the Best International Feature Film category.
Good luck to Stolevski and the rest of the team!
The upcoming movie is about a chosen family that tries to stay together after facing a personal loss and needing to deal with the anti-queer laws of the country they live in.
The cast includes Anamaria Marinca, Alina Șerban, Samson Selim, Vladimir Tintor, Mia Mustafa, Džada Selim, Sara Klimoska, Rozafë Çelaj, and Ajse Useini.
The official synopsis talks about how Dita, who never aspired to become a mother, finds herself having to raise young girls named Mia and Vanesa. The two girls are the daughters of Dita’s late girlfriend Suada. Mia’s the tiny troublemaker while Vanesa’s a rebellious teen. Coping with the loss of their mother further complicates Dita’s relationship with the sisters. Not only that but the household also has Dita’s longtime BFF Toni living there with his romantic partner Ali.
From what I could tell from the trailer, Dita and Toni have to pretend to be a straight couple in the eyes of the law to continue looking after the little girls and remain a family unit. However, issues arise, especially because of Vanesa’s rebelliousness.
Check the trailer out for yourself!
Housekeeping for Beginners is clearly going to be a very messy movie that showcases the various aspects of human nature and shines a light on what it means to love someone and form your own family. As I said, even though I’m prepared for a lot of drama being thrown my way, I do think the ending will be a happy one.
Focus Features will release Housekeeping for Beginners in select theatres in the US on January 26, 2024.
