“Kaiju No. 8” Turn-Based Action Game Debuts on Mobile

Fans of Kaiju No. 8 can go ahead and enjoy the video game on mobile devices for free. The turn-based action offering is from Akatsuki Games Inc., TOHO CO., LTD., and Production I.G, Inc.

The newly launched Kaiju No. 8 The Game is currently available on the App Store as well as Google Play. The title, as the name states, adapts Naoya Matsumoto‘s award-winning manga and anime franchise to allow players to replay events and more from the action-packed narrative. While the gameplay features turn-based mechanics as expected from such mobile fare, I like how it has voice acting! Not only that, but according to the promotional material, the title is in collaboration with Matsumoto, which means it offers fans original storylines!

Of course, being free-to-play, in-app purchases come with the territory. I haven’t played the game yet, but considering a PC (Steam) version is planned for a later release, I hope the in-app purchases are mostly cosmetic and the game isn’t pay-to-win. I’m okay with grinding in mobile games, but I think we all know when grinding becomes an excuse to encourage players to pay their way forward with real money.

Sharing more details about the content, you can select from three different Story Modes. The ‘Main Story’ branches from the manga and anime. You will follow original characters from the Closing Order with Zero Restrictions (CLOZER), a special unit led by Sagan Shinomiya. She’s the adoptive older sister of Kikoru Shinomiya.

‘Memories’ allows you to revisit classic moments from the IP. And ‘Character Stories’ lets you explore the relationships and interactions between the team members. It will highlight the daily lives of the characters in original scenarios.

As for the gameplay, you will assemble squads to face deadly Kaiju. You can access officers’ unique skills and Ultimates. The focus is on exposing the Kaiju’s cores to deliver a finishing blow. Iconic officers will join forces, including Kafka Hibino, Mina Ashiro, Reno Ichikawa, Kikoru Shinomiya, Soshiro Hoshina, Isao Shinomiya, and more.

The squads will be made of four characters, having you balance the characters’ strengths and abilities to create a well-rounded team. Characters can coordinate to provide powerful support during combat. Character attributes, skills, and equipment can be leveled up.

There’s also an equipment crafting system called the “Unipart R&D”, where each crafted item has randomly generated stats.

Accompanying the debut of the video game, you can acquire the 5-star Reno Ichikawa (in Numbers Weapon 6 Outfit) and the 5-star AR-Boreas weapon via the gacha. Reno Ichikawa first appeared in episode 19 of the Kaiju No. 8 anime.

For those who might not be familiar, Kaiju No. 8 is a manga series by Matsumoto. It was serialized on Shonen Jump+ (Shueisha) since 2020. The story involves intense battles between the Japan Defense Force tasked with eliminating Kaiju. The name comes from Kafka Hibino gaining the ability to transform into a humanoid kaiju.

Kaiju No. 8 anime season one premiered back in April 13, 2024. Season 2 began airing on July 19, 2025.
