Turn-Based Game “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown” Gets Announcement Trailer!
Fans of the long-running TMNT IP have an exciting new game to look forward to. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tacticle Takedown is the first-ever turn-based video game for the iconic turtles.
I like turn-based tactical games and I like TMNT. That’s why I have high hopes for the upcoming video game that will allow players to control Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo as they defeat the Foot Clan which is now being led by a powerful new leader.
The story seems to be taking place sometime in the future. Splinter and Shredder are dead (though I’m not sure if they might pop up later as a surprise). The four brothers, approaching adulthood, aren’t as close as they used to be. So, yeah, I guess their interactions will include lots of drama.
Inspired by classic TMNT titles, the gameplay will involve campaigns meant to showcase each turtle individually. There are supposed to be 20 “constantly-mutating” levels. From what I could understand, the “mutating” element of the surroundings means the levels will grow, shrink, and even add new threads with each turn. That’s why players will need to be quite strategic if they wish to succeed during their missions.
From indie studio Strange Scaffold (Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, I Am Your Beast), the visuals take inspiration from graphic novels as well as tabletop games. You will get to see paint splatter and diorama setpieces. The characters have been visualized as figurines. It’s kind of giving playing a real-life board game but in a virtual setting. I’m here for it.
The multi-genre soundtrack is by award-winning composer RJ Lake (Unbeatable & El Paso, Elsewhere).
Here’s the action-packed trailer!
Again, I do like the visuals. I kind of want the figurines as real merchandise. Judging from the trailer, and as expected, the turn-based gameplay does rely on movement, range, and attack points. There’s also a ‘Power’ and ‘Cost’ metric. Certain abilities, like Raph’s ‘Sai Strike’, give you an AP upon landing a KO. Some of the other abilities seem to allow you to move a bunch of spaces on the board while dealing damage to foes. There will be moments when a turtle gets surrounded by a bunch of enemies. The good news is that there’s a chance to Dodge attacks during the Enemy Turn when experiencing such a predicament.
The turtles do have customizable movesets to shape your playstyle. I’m interested in seeing if the movesets can be changed during a mission or if they need to be locked down before entering the fray. I’m also interested in learning about the game’s replayability value. Can campaigns be replayed with any turtle or are they turtle-specific. Hmm.
Also, while I understand wanting to put a spotlight on each turtle individually, I hope there are levels where at least two turtles get to team up if we won’t be getting all four of them together.
As of writing this post, there’s been no announcement about a tentative release date. However, I have my fingers crossed that TMNT: Tactical Takedown gets released soon in 2025.
You can go ahead and Wishlist the game right now on Steam.
Though I’m okay with checking it out on my laptop, I do feel that such a video game would be fun to experience on the Nintendo Switch.
