Thunderful’s sci-fi exploration title The Gunk is now available for players on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. Are you ready to solve the mystery behind a strange substance messing up a planet’s ecosystem?
The Gunk has been promoted as Thuderful’s story-driven sci-fi title that emphasizes exploration. You will get to play as a character named Rani who, along with her partner Becks, travel through space scrapping for resources. However, one day the duo stumbles upon a barren planet that’s been infested with a strange undiscovered substance they call “the gunk”. The narrative will have them trying to figure out where the substance came from and if it’s responsible for an ancient civilization that’s been left in ruins on the planet.
The gameplay is about exploration. You will get to travel an alien world featuring biomes that include rocky canyons, dense jungles, deep subterranean caves, and a lot more. The mysterious substance is behind making the different zones barren. Using Rani’s upgradable goo-sucking power-glove, you will need to eradicate the infestation to reveal a flourishing ecosystem.
Along the way, Rani can scan the environment to make new discoveries and learn more about the alien planet she’s on. The discoveries you make will fill out her findings in a logbook, giving players who dig into these entries a bunch of clues about what happened on the gunk-infested planet.
Here’s the trailer!
I like the overall visuals. Rani’s movements feel dynamic and there seems to be a bit of action and puzzle-solving involved in the gameplay, too. Also, seeing a charming ecosystem grow after you have dealt with the gunk in an area feels satisfying.
“We’re delighted that players can finally visit the alien world we’ve lovingly crafted for them in The Gunk on Xbox and PC,” said Game Director Ulf Hartelius. “We’ve been itching to tell a more ‘grown-up’ story than you’ll have seen in our previous games and that’s precisely what we aim to deliver here in this rich sci-fi world that I hope players are going to have a lot of fun in!”
