What’s San Diego Comic-Con without some comics news? Oni Press has announced that Eisner Award winner Bryan Lee O’Malley will return to his iconic, best-selling Scott Pilgrim series for the first time since its conclusion.

Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott #1 is a brand-new comic prequel to the popular Scott Pilgrim EX video game, which released earlier this year. The 16-page one-shot will introduce the game’s antagonist, Metal Scott, while also featuring never-before-seen extras and showing a look at O’Malley’s creative process.

“When I was asked to create a minicomic for Scott Pilgrim EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications,” said Bryan Lee O’Malley. “Only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It’s only a trifle, but returning to Scott’s Toronto really did feel like coming home.”

Scott met Ramona. Sparks flew. The two of them had to work together in order to defeat Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes and their nefarious leader, Gideon Gordon Graves. Some other stuff happened in various media formats that may or may not be canon. That’s all in the past. These days, Scott and Ramona are a happy couple, and the Exes have moved on from their unhealthy obsessions. I guess they all got therapy or whatever. Now, after a period of peace, a new threat is about to emerge. Are our heroes ready? Let’s find out!!!

It’s been more than 20 years since the world first met 19-year-old Scott Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life. The series became a cultural phenomenon, with a much-acclaimed (and highly-quoted) feature film adaptation in 2010 starring Hollywood heavyweights like Michael Cera, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, and Anna Kendrick. An anime semi-sequel series hit Netflix in 2023 that reunited the entire original cast.

Dare we hope that this new comic will open up the potential for even more? After all, the animated series perfectly set up a possible second season! I absolutely loved the animated series, and I would be so happy if we got more episodes.

Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott arrives in stores November 16.

Stay tuned for more coverage from SDCC 2026!
