“X-Men: Apocalypse” First Official Trailer Isn’t Impressive Enough!
The first official trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse has been released, and while it showcased new mutants joining the team and some stunning visuals, I didn’t find it that impressive.
I have no idea what the final film is going to be like, but I do feel that Fox could’ve done a lot better with the trailer. It starts with Sansa Stark (don’t make me call her Jean Grey because Sophie Turner will always be a Stark to me) having a nightmarish premonition about the world being destroyed. We see familiar faces from the First Class franchise, and Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) returns to tell the audience exactly what Apocalypse is up to and why he should be feared. I would rather the trailer showed it rather than telling. Why couldn’t they have shown Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), a God-like being, wreaking havoc rather than have a voice over tell us how very powerful he is? I know they showed some shots of New York being destroyed, but it only lasted for a few seconds, and they would’ve looked far better without a self-important voice over.
As for the plot of the film that I could make out from the trailer, thanks to Moira being so vocal about everything, Apocalypse is supposedly the first mutant ever born. He decides to appear in the 80’s and chooses four horsemen: Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn). They capture Professor X (James McAvoy), New York lies in ruins, and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) leads the young versions of Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Sansa Stark into battle.
The only thing I’m glad about is the return of Quicksilver (Evan Peters), who was the highlight of Days of Future Past, and Storm actually using her powers in a manner worthy of the Goddess she is. The clip where she travelled through a lightning bolt looked epic, and I hope to see more awesomeness from her in the film. I also think time-travel is going to be involved somehow, because no mutant in Fox’s Marvel Universe is capable of instantly rebuilding a city, unless they decide to introduce Magneto’s reality-manipulating daughter, Wanda, into the mix.
At this point, the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse is just one giant exposition with no depth to it. We all know every major mutant is going to survive the battle with Apocalypse, and that’s why the stakes don’t feel real enough. You know the promotion department messed up when the biggest reveal in the trailer is a shot of Professor X finally going bald.
X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
