Dynamite to Release Red Rising “Sons of Ares” Prequel

Sons of Ares comic cover

In December, we got our first real look at the follow-up series to Pierce Brown’s best-selling Red Rising trilogy. Yesterday, it was announced that we’re getting a prequel as well: Red Rising: Sons of Ares.

The new comic series, written by Pierce Brown and Rik Hoskin with art by Eli Powell, will be released by Dynamite Entertainment, with the first issue scheduled to hit stands this May. The comic will explore the events that led to the creation of the Sons of Ares, the secret organization behind the uprising in Brown’s books. We learn, along with Darrow, the identity of the mysterious Ares in Golden Son, and are given a brief background as to why he would want to topple society, but Sons of Ares will take us further.

“It’s a dream come true to bring the world of Red Rising to comic books, and a real pleasure Jedi-mind melding with Rik in the writing process,” said Brown. “Sons of Ares is a story made for new and veteran readers alike.”

Red Rising takes place in a future where humans have colonized much of the solar system, and one’s place in the societal hierarchy depends on your color. The Golds – powerful, wealthy, and genetically engineered to be practically perfect – rule all, while the lowly Reds toil in hard labor. Sons of Ares is set 20 years before Darrow’s journey begins and tells the story of what happens when a Gold falls in love with a Red.

Said Hoskin, “We’re exploring the effects that the inflexible regime has on an individual who’s a key figure from the books, looking at the limits of humanity in a dehumanizing system. For me, that’s the key to the books — the very human characters striving against a system geared to beating them down. It’s harsh, cruel, unfair and — occasionally — uplifting.”

No word yet on how many issues the comic will be, but I am excited at the prospect of learning more about the history of the world. Not to mention, this could lead to even more comics – like, perhaps, one about the original Iron Golds?
