LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain – DVD Review
LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain ended up being one of the best kid-friendly releases from Warner Bros. Animation because of its self-awareness. I highly recommend watching it.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Brain Drain DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own
I enjoyed watching DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year but the new LEGO-treatment release in the successful franchise is definitely one of the best comic-book inspired animated films I’ve seen. LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain upped the comedic ante by being self-aware. The characters knew they were made of LEGO bricks and that they were in an animated film. I enjoyed every little joke they made involving their existence. I want a sequel!
The plot of Brain Drain revolves around mind control and amnesia. It’s simple enough to follow and it is also resolved in a satisfying manner. Here’s the official synopsis:
When Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Bumblebee and Katana suddenly realize they cannot remember a single moment from their Monday at Super Hero High, the young DC Super Heroes spring into sleuthing action! Suspecting foul-play, they band together to retrace their steps and uncover the mystery of who exactly stole their memories – and what nefarious plan might be afoot?
The central characters are Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Batgirl as they try to make sense of an amnesia-related mystery. The three work well together and their interactions are quite fun. Lena Luthor also plays a role in this film and yes, I was keeping my eyes open for any Supercorp worthy scenes. The main villain is Eclipso and our teenaged superheroes also have to go against their mind-controlled friends and a lot of krytomites to bring her down.
LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain was directed by Todd Grimes from a script by Jeremy Adams. The voice cast returns its core cast in Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman), Tara Strong (Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy), Anais Fairweather (Supergirl), Teala Dunn (Bumblebee) and Stephanie Sheh (Katana), with Ashlyn Selich joining the group (as Batgirl). The cast also includes Yvette Nicole Brown (Amanda Waller), Greg Cipes (Beast Boy), Romi Dames (Lena Luthor), John DiMaggio (Gorilla Grodd, Wildcat), Jennifer Hale (Mad Harriet), Josh Keaton (Flash), Tom Kenny (Gordon), Rachael MacFarlane (Artemiz), Mona Marshall (Eclipso), Khary Payton (Cyborg) and Meredith Salenger (Lashina).
Coming to the DVD release, the artwork is bright on the front cover. The back has details about the movie along with some specs. I found no fault with the picture and sound quality in the single-disc release. The entire movie is very bright and colorful. The visuals were done justice through the ‘matted’ widescreen presentation.
All in all, LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain is a highly enjoyable movie and I was pleasantly surprised due to its self-awareness. It also has female heroes saving the day so that’s always good. Here are a few clips (courtesy of WBHE) you can enjoy!
