Netflix Slaps Back, Strikes Nickelodeon Deal
We’ve been all about Disney+ the past couple days, but Netflix is dragging the spotlight back on themselves by announcing a multi-year deal with Nickelodeon.
The all-out brawl among online streaming services continues today. Disney+ launched and now other streaming services are scrambling to stay relevant and competitive in the face of a media giant stepping into their territory. Forbes predicted that Netflix could lose 25% of its subscribers during the Disney+ launch, so it’s no surprise that Netflix would be particularly defensive of its place as the top dog in the streaming world. It’s clear that this Nickelodeon deal will be a push to remain competitive and push back against Disney’s play on our nostalgia.
The output arrangement will yield original animated feature films and TV series based on existing Nickelodeon library characters as well as newly created ones. Forthcoming specials under the agreement will be based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
A deal like this would obviously take months to negotiate, but the timing of the announcement is likely no coincidence. All eyes are on the streaming world right now and everyone is curious about who is going to do what as a response to Disney+.
Nickelodeon plays on the same nostalgia that a lot of content on Disney+ does, but I’m not sure if it has the same pull. Kids like myself, who grew up without cable, don’t really have an affinity towards any of their properties. I was raised on Disney films, and now Disney has my current fixations: Marvel and Star Wars. For me personally, the choice is an easy one. But still, the power of Nickelodeon fandom is strong and this could keep people around for a while longer.
It’ll be interesting to see what Amazon Studios and CBS All Access do in response. Your move, guys.

I would sell my soul to Netflix for Avatar the Last Airbender.
