Young actress Josie Totah, who came out as transgender back in 2018, has landed the lead role in the upcoming Saved by the Bell reboot. The upcoming show is expected to premiere on NBC Universal’s Peacock streaming service this year.

The Saved by the Bell reboot will, apparently, also act as a sequel to the original franchise. Previous cast members (including Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley) will be returning. The new half-hour comedy is from Tracy Wigfield (Great News).

Josie Totah is going to be credited as a producer, too. Look at her making moves!

The premise involves exploring what happens when California Gov. Zack Morris “gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools and proposes the affected students be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state – including Bayside High.”

Now, I don’t know about you, but I would be okay if the upcoming show addressed how problematic Zach Morris was as a teenager. Saved by the Bell had issues y’all, even though it featured some good laughs.

Anyway, Totah will be playing Lexi. The character has been described as a beautiful and sharp-tongued cheerleader. She’s Bayside High’s most popular girl. Fellow students admire as well as fear Lexi.

I know Totah from Glee. She has what it takes to play an impressive Lexi.

The upcoming reboot was picked up with a straight-to-series order back in September. It will be produced by Universal Television. Wigfield will serve as showrunner and will also executive produce alongside the original series creator Peter Engel and Franco Bario. Berkley and Lopez will produce, too.

Lopez also faced some backlash in July of 2019 after making controversial (and downright disrespectful) comments about gender identity and parenting. He did apologize. So, there’s that.

Peacock is expected to launch this April. Along with Saved by the Bell, the originals for the service also includes Battlestar Galactica.

More details about Peacock are expected to be shared on January 16, 2020, during an NBC Universal investor presentation.
