The Marvel Comics Universe will be getting a new Muslim hero when Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 13 is released this March. The upcoming hero goes by the code name Amulet (his real name is Fadi Fadlalah).

With her solo series debuting back in February of 2014, even though Kamala Khan faced some negative press, she has gone on to become one of the more popular young MCU heroes. She will be part of the upcoming Avengers video game and is getting her own solo series on Disney+ streaming service.

Her success shows that Marvel fans are open to diverse fictional characters. That’s why I think Amulet will be received well, too.

Writer Saladin Ahmed and Jordanian-American illustrator Sara Alfageeh co-created the character. Fadi will be making his way to Jersey City from the Midwest in Issue 13 of Kamala’s current solo series.

Ahmed shared, “Amulet is a fun, mysterious new character who will be playing a role in MAGNIFICENT MS. MARVEL for months to come. We’re keeping most of the details of him close to our chests, but I can tell you that his powers are magical in nature, and that he is an Arab-American Super Hero from Michigan.”

He continued, “As an Arab-American who basically learned to read from Marvel Comics, being able to team up with the phenomenally talented Sara Alfageeh to bring Amulet into the Marvel Universe is literally a dream come true. We can’t wait for fans to meet him!”

Alfageeh said, “Saladin let me have a lot of fun with this concept. We talked about his defensive-style powers and how they tied into his background as a Lebanese kid. The blue and white color palette and the circular design were pulled from the Nazar, a symbol that pops up all over the Middle East that protects the wearer from the evil eye — the harmful intentions of others. A bit of a historical, supernatural touch. We tend to associate sharp corners and edges with evil, and rounded designs and circles with good. This character is a gentle giant, so I wanted to make sure that even with his size he was shaped like a friend!”

I’m all for making a variety of fictional characters be part of the MCU. In my opinion, the more diverse a character’s background, the more interesting stories we can get from them.

And I love the fact there are now different types of Muslims being portrayed in Marvel comics because that’s how diverse Muslim men and women are in real life.

I love it!

Also, I’m not sure if it’s just me, but if Fadi ends up being a queer Muslim character, I won’t be surprised. There’s just something about his character design.

Magnificent Ms. Marvel Issue 11 (which I recently reviewed) was released this week. Kamala has been facing a lot of trouble trying to balance her superhero and personal responsibilities. So, I’m happy to know she will find a friend she can lean on in Issue 13.

While Nakia, Bruno, and the rest of Kamala’s friends do try to help when possible, she needs someone who has superpowers to stand with her.
