Halle Berry’s Directorial Debut “Bruised” Joins TIFF 2020 Lineup

I have been waiting to know about the release information for Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised. Turns out, it will be part of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Of course, TIFF 2020 will be making changes due to the current pandemic.

The titles that have become part of the TIFF 2020 event include Bruised (a woman-led MMA-centric story), Concrete Cowboys starring Idris Elba, Ammonite (a queer romance story starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan), Good Joe Bell, Fauna, Another Round, Spring Blossom, and True Mothers. It’s expected that more films will be revealed in the coming weeks.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the event will have approximately 50 new features, “with a further five programs of short films rounding out its annual offering.”

The interesting changes include interactive talks, film cast reunions, and Q&As that adhere to social distancing guidelines. There will be physical screenings, drive-ins, outdoor events, and digital screenings. Fans can also look forward to virtual industry talks, red carpets, and more.

A festival press release stresses that TIFF’s “in-person film festival will be contingent on the province’s reopening framework to ensure that festival venues and workplaces practice, meet and exceed public health guidelines.”

“The pandemic has hit TIFF hard, but we’ve responded by going back to our original inspiration — to bring the very best in film to the broadest possible audience,” said TIFF’s Cameron Bailey, artistic director at the festival. “Our teams have had to rethink everything, and open our minds to new ideas. In countless video calls over the past three months we have rebuilt our Festival for 2020 drawing on our five decades of commitment to strong curation, support for filmmakers and engagement with audiences. We have listened to this year’s urgent calls for greater representation of underrepresented voices. You’ll see that this year at the Festival. And we have watched as audiences have embraced cinema’s ability to transport them through screens of all sizes. You’ll see that too. We’re excited to present thoughtful, high-impact programming this September that reflects our belief that there’s no stopping great storytelling.”

TIFF 2020 is expected to run from September 10, 2020, to September 19, 2020.

Talented names including Ava DuVernay, Taika Waititi, Nicole Kidman, Zhang Ziyi, David Oyelowo, Lulu Wang, Denis Villeneuve, and many more are expected to attend.

As far as my opinion goes, I’m glad to see the film industry making as many changes as possible to ensure movies are still being showcased during current times. We all know that Hollywood needs more diverse voices in front of- as well as behind- the camera. So, here’s hoping that films like Bruised, Concrete Cowboys, and more get the support they deserve as the awards season rolls in.

Being a fan of the Oscar-winning Halle Berry, I’m looking forward to seeing how she will fare as a director. She already has experience as a producer (including the highly enjoyable Boomerang series by Lena Waithe).

Other than Bruised, she’s expected to begin filming Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi movie Moonfall this Fall. Berry’s cast members include Josh Gad and Patrick Wilson.
