Halle Berry and Lena Waithe Teaming Up for Boomerang TV Series on BET!
The upcoming Boomerang TV series on BET is making me very excited. Oscar-winner Halle Berry, who starred in the 1992 film, has boarded the project as an executive producer along with the extremely talented Lena Waithe!
BET announced plans for a Boomerang TV series back in April. While some fans were hesitant about seeing a beloved 1992 film get such a treatment, the fact Berry and Waithe are onboard is sure to calm a lot of them down. The series has received a 10-episode order and is set to debut sometime next year.
It is interesting to note the current project isn’t a reboot. Instead, it is a continuation of the film’s story and will focus on the son of Jacqueline Broyer (played by Robin Givens in the film), and Marcus (Eddie Murphy) and Angela’s (Berry) daughter. Fingers crossed the parents decide to appear in the TV show for a few episodes or at least do a cameo.
“This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story,” said Waithe. “There’s no point in trying to remake a classic. It can’t be done. So we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!”
“I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trailblazer in her own right. I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen,” said Berry. She will soon begin working on her feature film directorial debut.
Ben Cory Jones, who has written for Insecure and Underground, will serve as showrunner and executive-produce with Waithe and Berry. Waithe will co-write the pilot with Jones.
Also, what is it going to take for us to get a sequel to B.A.P.S. I don’t care if it is a TV show or a movie as long as I get to see Nisi and Mickey again.
