“Legendary” Renewed for Season 2 by HBO Max
The ball competition reality show Legendary is coming back for another season on HBO Max. As a fan of this series, I’m quite happy.
The news about Legendary getting another season was shared the same day HBO Max made the final two episodes available for fans to stream. According to the reports, the second season will see the return of MC Dashaun Wesley and the judges Leiomy Maldonado, Jameela Jamil, Law Roach, and Megan Thee Stallion. The competition will be heading to LA for its second outing.
The nine-episode season had a two-episode debut on HBO Max on May 27, 2020. Episodes 8 and 9 aired on July 9, 2020. Of course, I have been covering the show over on our YouTube channel if you want to see my opinions regarding the performances.
Most of you might be familiar with the controversy surrounding this show when the initial judging panel was announced. Many people couldn’t understand why Jameela Jamil and Megan Thee Stallion were chosen as judges.
And I have to be honest, things didn’t get better when the show premiered. Jamil and Stallion looked out of place on the judging panel, especially when the guest judge (with a strong history connected to ball culture) Dominique Jackson was invited in the third episode.
Famous Drag Queen Monét X Change also brought up Jamil and Stallion during an interview with Wesley and Maldonado.
It took me a couple of episodes to be okay with seeing Jamil and Stallion judging the performances. And, frankly, I guess, I’ll be okay with their return in season 2. Considering how amazing Jamil is when it comes to sharing positivity and connecting with others, I expected her to play a role in helping the audience get to know the performers better (when they’re getting ready backstage and sharing their emotional journey). But it is what it is.
“Legendary was an HBO Max, day one premiere,” said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer of HBO Max and president of TNT, TBS, and truTV. “We knew we had something special and are proud that critics and audiences alike have embraced the series. Bringing this incredible world back for a second season furthers our commitment to high quality, compelling storytelling.”
Legendary is executive produced by David Collins, Rob Eric, and Michael Williams of Scout Productions. Renata Lombardo and Shant Tutunjian also serve as executive producers.
