‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ Teases Darkness Rising

Mistress of EvilMaleficent is a story of love and redemption. It appears that Mistress of Evil will be a cautionary tale about what happens when you go too far to protect the ones you love.

I love Maleficent. I love everything about her. I love the 2014 Angelina Jolie live action Disney film so much that I’ve begun a forearm tattoo piece in its honor. Imagine my surprise and utter delight when, as I wallowed in bed this evening, the teaser for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil dropped. I’d just been telling my mother over the weekend that it was coming up in October along with the release of Zombieland 2.

The sequel to the 2014 film, Mistress of Evil, adds a number of stars to its cast including Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, Ed Skrein in a yet-unnamed role, and Robert Lindsay as King John. Returning are Angelina Jolie in the titular role, Sam Riley as Diaval, and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora.

In the teaser, a haunting cover of Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” plays as Aurora becomes engaged to Prince Philip. Maleficent, as her guardian, accompanies her to what appears to be Aurora’s future royal in-laws’ castle. And then all hell breaks loose.

It’s unclear what exactly causes Maleficent to snap. She begins throwing green flames at soldiers, threatening Queen Ingrith with an unblinking, otherworldly stare. Her powerful wings, now returned to her, make her a tragic and frightening entity. Despite the tinge of melancholy (no doubt amplified by the trailer song), there’s a darkness yet unexplored in Maleficent’s complex character. Set against the mystical and magical moors and the haunting backdrop of a castle, Maleficent casts a sinister and otherworldly shadow.

The teaser ends with The Mistress of Evil’s sinister laugh, fading into an echo.

No news yet on when we can anticipate a full trailer but Maleficent: Mistress of Evil releases in theaters worldwide on October 18, 2019. I can tell you I’ll be first in line, bells (and horns) on.
