Movie Recommendation: ‘Without Warning’

On October 30, 1994, CBS and its affiliates aired a movie titled Without Warning, which was structured as a news broadcast. Concerns among the audience arose with some viewers convinced that this breaking news was actually happening.

When the TV movie Without Warning first premiered on CBS (October 30, 1994), the television network and its affiliates received frantic phone calls. CBS made sure to ensure viewers that the news broadcast was fake by airing disclaimers during commercial breaks, but that didn’t prevent the panic. Some viewers even called other news networks to ask why this breaking news wasn’t reported on their stations.

Without Warning begins as a murder mystery movie. Starring Loni Anderson and Ed Marinaro, the “movie” is then disrupted with a breaking news broadcast. News people like anchorman Sander Vanocur, along with scientists, report earthquakes, people having vanished mysteriously at impacted sites, and newly discovered asteroids hurtling towards Earth. The movie comes back only to be interrupted again with updates regarding the events, taking an urgent turn. One of the asteroids is reduced to pieces above the North Pole. The United States launches nuclear weapons on the remaining asteroids. As the asteroids made impact on major cities worldwide, the news broadcast ends in static.

The genuine reactions of the actors convinced some viewers that the crisis was legitimate. However, the movie provides hints that show otherwise. Several actors — including James Handy, Jane Kaczmarek, and Ron Canada — are among the cast. Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke even makes an appearance. There is also the mention of the G7 Summit, which had already occurred a few months before this news broadcast. Viewers unfamiliar with the actors and or the timing of the G7 summit that year would have likely thought that the threat was real.

It’s interesting to imagine what it would be like if Without Warning had been released this year instead. Even with deepfakes and AI generated content, some people may spread the news thinking it’s true. What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
