Disney Pixar “Toy Story 5” Easily Overtakes Weekend Box Office!

Disney Pixar Toy Story 5 easily sat itself at the top of the box office with an impressive domestic debut of an estimated $160 million.

Even though there are numerous people out there who can’t help but roll their eyes at Disney playing the nostalgia card by greenlighting sequels (I can relate!), you can’t deny the box office numbers and why sequels aren’t going away anytime soon. Certain folks might complain or groan. But a whole bunch of moviegoers (I can relate!) are ready to pay money to see new installments of long-running IPs. Toy Story 5 was expected to do well, and it sure did. Given how much money it’s predicted to make, I wouldn’t be surprised if Toy Story 6 gets announced very soon.

And you know what? Having watched the fifth animated Toy Story movie, I wouldn’t be against a sixth installment. Yeah, I really enjoyed watching Toy Story 5. The narrative dealing with traditional toys battling it out with tech toys made for a very intriguing hook. Making Jessie the lead character also made sense to the type of story being told, with Bonnie being the human kid. Woody’s been through a lot character-wise, and so has Buzz. It was Jessie’s turn to take the reins again after Toy Story 2 (1999). However, having said that, I have a feeling that the 6th chapter might give Buzz a lot more to do.

As of writing this post, the animated film has grossed more than $312 million at the global box office. The reported production budget is $250 million (wow!), and it is expected to make more than $1 billion once it ends its theatrical run.

Talking about the movie coming in at second place, Disclosure Day fell an approximate 61% from the debut weekend to earn around $17 million. Starring Emily Blunt, the latest sci-fi romp from Steven Spielberg has been… divisive.

With a reported production budget of almost $155 millon, it currently sits at an estimated haul of $160 million. Disclosure Day has a chance to barely break even for the studio, which, most likely, was expecting it to perform a lot better.

The positive word-of-mouth for Masters of the Universe hasn’t done much to help the live-action fantasy adventure at the box office, with it coming in at number 6 with an approximate $5.5 million. The current global haul stands at around $101 million. Masters of the Universe might find some much-deserved support on digital. However, hope for a live-action big-screen sequel has been squashed.

Queer-led horror movie Leviticus couldn’t manage to ride the horror hype on the coattails of Obsession and Backrooms. Directed and written by Adrian Chiarella, Leviticus debuted at number 8 with only $2.7 million. Now, of course, you can’t ignore that it only opened in 1076 theaters. But then again, the per-theater average hasn’t been impressive, signalling that Leviticus will have to find an audience on digital and streaming down the line.

Leviticus has a Critic Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, with the Audience Score of 83%. So, that’s promising.

Hugh Jackman-starring The Death of Robin Hood debuted at 9th place with only $2.6 million. A bummer for Jackson, who has continued not to be a major box office draw outside a handful of projects and his Marvel IP content across his decades-long career.
