NYCC 2025: Celebrating Batman in Animation

There are few American characters more iconic than the Dark Knight. Batman has been a part of the cultural identity of this country for almost a century. He has been reimagined countless times, in comics, novels, television, films, and animation.
Batman has been animated for nearly sixty years. The first animated series dates all the way back to 1968, but in the decades since, there have been various incarnations to both bring in new fans and entertain old fans. At this year’s New York Comic Con, Warner Bros. Animation gathered together the executive producers of four of the current incarnations to talk about their projects and Batman’s legacy.
Batman: Caped Crusader premiered on Prime Video in 2024 and offers a grim, mature Batman, along the lines of the classic Batman: The Animated Series. A second season has been greenlit and is expected in 2026.
Batwheels premiered on HBO Max in 2022 and gives a new take on the beloved franchise by placing the well-known characters in a Cars-like universe where the vehicles have personalities of their own. Season 3 is in the works and expected to drop later this year.
Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (Clash of the Empires) premiered just last month and reimagines Batman in the context of Mexican history and Mesoamerican culture. I actually got to talk to the creative team about the film at last year’s NYCC.
Bat-Fam, a sequel series to the film Merry Little Batman, follows the adventures of Bruce and Damian Wayne, as well as the loyal, long-suffering Alfred. The show will premiere on Prime Video on November 10, 2025.
Batman: Caped Crusader showrunner and executive producer James Tucker, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires director Juan Meza-Leon, Bat-Fam showrunner and executive producer Mike Roth, and Batwheels executive producer Simon J. Smith were all on hand in the press room to talk about Batman in animation.

Simon said they would finish Season 3 of Batwheels next year in another interview, but he didn’t say the release date yet, do you know when?
Unfortunately, no, I don’t know any more than anyone else!
