For those interested in a queer holiday film featuring a F/F romance, you might want to keep an eye out for Christmas at the Ranch when it comes to TVOD on October 18, 2022.
Directed by Christin Baker, who also co-wrote the film with Julie Anton, Christmas at the Ranch has been described as a horse girl, feel-good holiday romance about two women working together to save a family ranch and finding love along the way.
The premise involves Haley (Laur Allen) being called back to her family’s Nashville ranch. Working as an urban power broker, it’s been years since Haley visited the ranch, but she has no choice but to return because her brother Charles (Archie Kao) needs help with saving the land from the bank.
Once there, Haley gets to meet the ranch hand Kate (Amanda Righetti). Of course, the two don’t hit it off immediately. I take it there’s friction between Kate and Haley because they basically come from two different worlds, with Kate likely feeling that Haley doesn’t understand what it takes to run a ranch. But the two women grow closer while working together to save the homestead.
I mean, yes, the story isn’t reinventing the wheel. But then again, no one expects holiday-themed movies to do so. I’m just glad Hollywood’s giving people holiday content that is led by queer characters.
From the trailer below it looks like the film won’t have an ounce of homophobia. So, that’s always a plus when telling such stories. We all know the struggles being faced by the queer community in the real world. But it’s also nice to sometimes watch stories that offer an escape.
Produced by A Baker Production, New Era Ent will be releasing Christmas at the Ranch on October 18, 2022. A full digital release will follow.
Going by the information I could gather, it looks like the film ran an Indiegogo Campaign in early 2021. The campaign went on to collect more than $85,700 CAD against the initial goal of $24,000. From my understanding, 120% of the initial goal was surpassed in under 12 hours.
Currently, Baker seems to be working on a 4th lesbian/queer holiday romcom titled Merry & Gay. The story is about Broadway star Becca coming back to her small town for Christmas. Becca begins to fall back in love with her high school sweetheart Sam. And though Sam’s hesitant to let Becca back in, their two meddling moms have other plans.
Dia Frampton has been cast as Becca with non-binary talent Andi René Christensen playing Sam.
