As expected, the R-rated superhero flick Deadpool 3 or Deadpool and Wolverine topped the box office while breaking a bunch of records along the way with a $205 million opening weekend.

The $205 million opening weekend debut for Deadpool and Wolverine means that it now holds the record for the biggest R-rated opening ever, surpassing the previous two installments in the Ryan Reynolds-led franchise that began back in 2016.

The first movie had an opening weekend of $135 million, with the second installment coming in at $125 million. The third film’s impressive number shows that there’s a huge audience for the iconic Merc with a Mouth as well as Jackman’s Wolverine. And yes, people want more fun R-rated superhero action movies.

Such an opening is also impressive due to the fact that Deadpool and Wolverine continues being a queer-inclusive film with Wade being comfortable with his queer sexuality (there’s a lot of flirting with Logan and a bunch of queer jokes from Wade) and the queer couple Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio also appearing. I had my doubts about the overall queerness of the film due to the House of Mouse getting the X-Men brand, but Reynolds and his team delivered.

I would have loved to see a variant of Wolverine being in a queer romantic relationship with Hercules. But oh well. What we got was still good.

As for my opinion, I really wanted the Fox X-Men to make an appearance, especially Halle Berry as Storm. Sigh!

Anyway, with a reported production budget of $200 million and having already grossed an approximate $438 million at the global box office, the third live-action Deadpool movie is a success. I’m looking forward to seeing where he will pop up next with Kevin Feige having announced new MCU content during SDCC 2024. I do think we are definitely getting a fourth Deadpool chapter.

As for the rest of the recent box office, Twisters came in second with an approximate $35 million. Starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, the disaster flick has managed to collect around $221 million at the global box office. However, with a reported production budget of $155 million, it still needs a lot more cash to cement itself as a hit.

I enjoyed watching Twisters. But the production budget is just too high for a film that doesn’t have any stars attached to it.
