Steven Universe at SDCC 2018: Love Really Is All Around

Steven Universe at SDCC

Steven Universe is a show filled with love, so it’s no surprise to anyone that Steven Universe at SDCC was just one giant love fest. From cast hugs to emotional panels, this was a chance for fans to celebrate love in all its forms.

A big topic of discussion at the Steven Universe at SDCC panel was the wedding between Sapphire and Ruby, which happened in the most recent episodes of season 5. Creator Rebecca Sugar told the audience that the wedding has been in the works for a long while. In fact, in an earlier episode, there was a shot of Ruby and Sapphire holding hands, and they were meant to have rings on their fingers.

Fans had plenty to celebrate with several announcements, including the upcoming release of the DVD of “The Heart of the Crystal Gems”, the title of the most recent Steven-bomb of episodes, starting with “Now We’re Only Falling Apart“. The DVD, which will be released on August 14th, features all five episodes, one of which is extended. Those who attended the panel were also treated to a surprise screening of the next episode, “Legs From Here to Homeworld”, featuring the first appearance of White Diamond. There was also the big news that a Steven Universe movie is in the works and will be coming soon to Cartoon Network!

Most of all, though, the panel was a place for fans to come together. One mother tearfully thanked Sugar for creating the show, because her son has Asperger’s, but thanks to Steven Universe, he’s been able to communicate more effectively how he’s feeling by comparing it to characters on the show. Another fan talked about how drawing Steven Universe comics gave her her big break in the comics industry, and still another stated that she wished a show like this had been around when she was younger and struggling with mental illness, to which Estelle responded, “You have it now.” There was a lot of support for everyone who stepped up to the mic, and it just goes to show how important media – and representation in media – can be for people. I was definitely feeling the love.
