Is It Time to Start Getting Excited about These Superman CW Series Rumors Yet?

Superman CW series

I heard the rumor. I’m sure a lot of people did. Earlier this week, FandomWire reported that Warner Bros. are seriously considering a Superman CW series set in the Arrowverse. I was hesitant to believe it, but the more news that comes out… Is it time to start getting excited yet?

I’m completely unfamiliar with FandomWire as a site, and I’m always wary of “exclusive” news that comes from sites I’ve not heard of. A couple of years ago there were rumors swirling that Harry Styles was going to guest star on Teen Wolf, with people pointing to a Jeff Davis interview that was entirely fabricated as a source. I don’t want to dismiss the reports outright, because Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman in season 2 of Supergirl was largely well-received, and I have to think they’d be crazy not to at least consider the possibility of giving him his own show. And as we go along, the reports seem to be gaining more traction. But it’s still best to take this news with a grain of salt.

And yet, the more that we learn about the fifth annual Arrowverse crossover with Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl (this year it’s “Elseworld”), the more I am getting my hopes up. First, of course, was the news that Superman would be returning for the crossover. At the same time, we learned that Lois Lane would also be appearing in the crossover. Not to mention there’s the curious photos that Hoechlin and Arrow star Stephen Amell have posted from the set, which seem to hint that we’ll be journeying to Smallville during the crossover. (Both men also shared the above photo of Superman in his black suit.) We already know that the crossover will serve as a backdoor pilot for Ruby Rose’s Batwoman, and according to the as-yet-unconfirmed FandomWire report, the studio intends to do the same for Superman – see how the crossover performs and what people’s reactions are to Clark and Lois, and go from there.

Then, the news broke yesterday that Supergirl will soon begin casting for the infamous Lex Luthor, who will appear on season 4 in a reoccurring role. Lex won’t be part of the crossover, and no word yet on if Superman will be appearing in any of the episodes in which Lex does. But still, how can you cast Superman’s most iconic nemesis and not have the two interact?

Now, I would absolutely love for Hoechlin to get his own Superman show. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of his, and I love his portrayal of the Man of Steel. But, wow, that’s going to be a lot of DC shows on the CW. They currently have five, and with Batwoman joining the ranks, that brings the total number up to six. If Superman gets his own show, they’ll be able to put a DC character on your screen every night of the week. I mean, I’ll still be watching, because SuperHoech on a regular basis, but you run the risk of the audience getting fatigue, and it’s possible that bringing Superman back to TV will take away from Supergirl.

What do you all think of this news? Do you think there’s any truth to the rumors? Are you excited about the possibility of a Superman CW series? Who do you want them to cast as Lex?
