Have you played Psychopomp? I was actually in the process of playing it for a spooky game recommendation when I was pleasantly surprised by a sequel announcement.

The game is a weird and surreal experience where you explore structures, interact with bizarre entities, and, presumably, do something very wrong. It’s a masterful mix of utterly surreal scenes and a creeping sense of dread propped up by a morbidly dark sense of humor.

It’s free on Steam, too, although there’s an enhanced edition, Psychopomp GOLD, which costs a few dollars. I personally think it’s worth it to experience such a beautifully macabre piece, but I’ll tell you more during the review.

The game gained a bit of a cult following, a deserved reward for anyone willing to put out such unapproachable, yet fascinating art. It’s not unplayable by any means, but it’s unconventional, a bit ugly, and overall, deeply unsettling.

Psychopomp 2 promises to expand on the original with a more three-dimensional approach to characters and navigation, along with the continuation of the puzzling narrative.

It’s heartwarming and fun to see such a weird game get a deserved sequel, and I personally hope Fading Club is able to keep it as weird and abstract as they want. It’s refreshing to see a game like this get the chance to expand.

Maybe with time, it’ll get a deserving spot in popular culture. Much like the cartoons, web series, and games that clearly inspired it.

Psychopomp 2 doesn’t have a release date yet. Regardless, when the time comes, we’ll be able to see the kind of nightmares Fading Club has prepared for us.

Is the Earth rotting? Would we ever know? And can we do something to stop it? We’ll see.
