The American Manga Awards Return to NYC August 21st

Anime NYC and Japan Society announced yesterday that the second annual American Manga Awards will be held August 21, 2025, in New York City. As with last year’s event, it will coincide with the first day of Anime NYC.
“After such an amazing response to the inaugural American Manga Awards, we’re thrilled to return for year two and continue celebrating the creativity and global impact of manga,” said MK Goodwin, Anime Portfolio Vice President at LeftField Media, the company that produces Anime NYC. “This year, we’re building on that momentum to further honor the creators, stories, and publishers shaping the medium and to spotlight the passion that connects fans and creators across cultures.”
Professionals across the industry will serve as nominating judges, who will be tasked with selecting the best English-published manga titles representing a variety of categories. Categories include: Best New Manga, Best Continuing Series, Best New Edition of Classic Manga, Best Translation, Best Lettering, Best Publication Design, and new for this year: Best One-Shot Manga.
VIZ Media, one of the leading publishers and distributors of manga and anime in North America, is the Gold Sponsor of this year’s event.
Submissions are currently open on Anime NYC’s website, where you can find detailed guidelines and entry instructions. Nominees will be announced to the public on June 17. Winners will be determined by voting from professionals who work in an editorial capacity at North American (US/Canada) manga publishers.
The invite-only ceremony will be held August 21 at Japan Society’s New York headquarters for press and members of the manga industry.
This year the event is on the first day of NYC’s premiere anime convention, which for the first time ever will open on Thursday. This is a move that has many people skeptical, given that last year’s Anime NYC had a lot of empty spots on the schedule. However, last year was the first year that the convention was held in August instead of November, which means there was three less months of planning. So I’m hopeful that this year won’t have the same gaps that last year did, although I do wish they had waited a year or so before adding an additional day.
